For the last 2 years, the atmosphere around the Cabinet expansion by the NC was created in such a way that it felt like once it is done, half of Kashmir's problems would be solved. And today, what did we get:
Ali Mohd Sagar: 68+ years old.
Saifullah Mir: 65+ years old.
Shameema Firdous: 60+ years old.
Altaf Kaloo: 55+ years old.
How can almost an entire Cabinet, who have crossed the retirement age, be considered wise enough to be Ministers to decide the future of a generation they have no connection with? How can they understand challenges they have never lived and never felt?
If a 27 to 31-year-old has the potential to clear the country's toughest exam & is trusted to run the entire civil & police administration of a district, why shouldn't he be in the Assembly using all his potential, knowledge & energy for his own people?
Why should that place be filled with people old enough that the Govt itself has declared retired from service? How can they become the decision-makers for our future?
You trust the youth to crack UPSC, JKPSC, IIT and NEET. You trust them to hold the gun at the border & the pen in the DC office. But you exclude them from the decision making. For how long?
At a time when nearly 70% of J&K's population is youth, and when AI & robotics are redefining the very concepts of livelihood, education, jobs, security and human relationships, the entire Cabinet has been handed over to old lot.
Can they understand the trauma of youth who are being systematically excluded from all institutions because of an unjust reservation policy?
Can they understand the depression and anxiety of students across all fields spending 10 hours a day inside libraries for years with no outcome? The humiliation of exam scams, years wasted waiting for recruitment lists, and interviews that never come?
Can they feel the pain of a boy or a girl who desperately wants to live and work here, but is forced to leave home for a job in Delhi or Dubai just so that his family can eat?
Can they understand the fear of an AI-driven world where degrees are useless without skills, while 80% of our education is still traditional and outdated?
These are young people's battles & only the youth understand the gravity of these issues. Old energy can’t give new answers. If Kashmir's future is youth, why is there no youth in power?

Disturbed to learn about the attack on a Kashmir bound bus in Haryana, leaving an elderly passenger injured and others traumatised. Reports of threats against J&K-registered vehicles are causing concern among people. Replugging.
The SIR drive in Bihar, described as a routine revision of electoral rolls risks replicating the effects of an NRC-like exercise. Under this “Special Intensive Revision,” all voters who are not listed in the 2003 rolls are now required to resubmit documents proving their eligibility. Previously, only proof of birth was needed but now the documentation demands are significantly stricter:
- Individuals born after 2003 must provide proof of both parents place of birth.
- Those born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004 must furnish proof of their own birth and/or one parent’s place of birth.
- Officials claim these requirements align with the Citizenship Act, 1955. However, the scale and structure of the process suggest it is far more than a standard update.
The timeline is alarmingly short. The process begins this Wednesday, with a draft roll to be published today (August 1). Voters have until September 1 to file claims and objections, while the final roll is due on September 30. In just over a month, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are expected to conduct door to door verification across the state. Eligible voters must submit pre-filled forms along with supporting documents to BLOs or upload them via the ECINET portal or app.
Yet questions remain: How many people, especially in rural and marginalised communities have access to Internet or even the basic awareness of the process?
This exercise raises serious concerns, particularly because it appears to disproportionately target alleged “Bangladeshi immigrants” a group often conflated with Bengalis or Muslims. The risk of exclusion is very high, especially for orphans, abandoned children, migrant labourers, homeless people and those whose parents lack official documentation.
This is likely to disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters. While some may have the required paperwork, many others especially those living in slums, remote villages & tribal areas simply do not.
The parallels of this exercise with the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam are stark, which led to the exclusion of nearly 2 million people, many of whom are still fighting legal battles to prove their citizenship despite having lived in India their entire lives. The Bihar revision, though framed as administrative, carries similar risks of mass exclusion without adequate safeguards. Although the Election Commission of India presents this as a routine update, the entire design, speed & intent of the whole exercise suggest otherwise. With reported plans to replicate this model nationwide, the fear of widespread disenfranchisement is imminent.

The tale of leadership of 2 protests in India:
Anti-CAA (2019-20) Anti-ECI/SIR (2026)
Umar Khalid Abhijeet Dipke
Sharjeel Imam Saurav Das
Gulfisha Fatima Neha Bohra
Safoora Zargar Ratna Singh
Shifa-ur-Rehman Ashutosh Ranka
Today, the protests happening in Delhi led by Abhijeet, Neha, Saurav, etc is an extension of the same resistance that was first lit & led by Umar, Gulfisha, Sharjeel, etc in Shaheen Bagh. But the difference in how the two were treated is heartbreaking.
What is being fought for at Jantar Mantar today, the people in Shaheen Bagh, AMU & Jamia were fighting for almost the same in 2019-20. But how is it that the pain of Jantar Mantar becomes the conscience of the nation, while the pain & tears of Shaheen Bagh, AMU, Jamia are buried, criminalised & jailed in silence?
When Abhijeet, Neha, Saurav & others were touched, the entire civil society, media & political ecosystem erupts in one voice. Editorials are written, debates are held, and they are hailed as defenders of democracy & the future of the nation.
But when students were lathi-charged inside AMU & Jamia, when Shaheen Bagh was met with brute force & young activists were branded as anti-nationals & thrown into jails to rot for years without trial, there was ominous silence. No political party called for a protest, no studio held a debate that democracy was in danger. Instead, the same media that is defending Jantar Mantar today presented them as anti-nationals.
We are celebrating Jantar Mantar today, but we abandoned the daughters & sons of our nation when they were fighting for what is being fought today in 2019 at Shaheen Bagh.
History may remember that in 2026 all opposition parties assembled together to stand with student activists to save democracy, but it will never forget that in 2019 they closed their eyes & ears and let poor Muslim students pay the price for saving that same democracy.

My earlier X (Twitter) account was hacked in July, and despite repeated attempts and complaints for over three months, I have been unable to recover it. I have sent 50+ emails and received not a single response. That says a lot about X’s customer support system and its disregard for the concerns of its subscribers.
Much thanks to our cyber security experts here and @X for this sheer incompetence. @elonmusk
I am now active on this new account, despite my deeply disappointing experience with a platform that cannot seem to protect the security of a paying subscriber, let alone provide basic customer support or respond to legitimate concerns.
Yet, you continue to stay here because of the people you connect with, the knowledge you gain, and the information you exchange. Before bragging about Starlink in the name of education and seeking to attract more subscribers and revenue from India, @elonmusk should first ensure that X has a responsive support team that takes its existing subscribers seriously.
Requesting everyone to connect with me on this account and help spread the word as we rebuild our network.

NC cannot escape its responsibility for the 1987 blunder. Kashmiris have paid the price for decades.
After being the first to attack the PAGD, @jkpdp MLA Waheed Para has now turned his guns on the unity of the I.N.D.I.A. bloc.
One has to wonder why @INCIndia continues to accommodate @jkpdp in the alliance.
Instead of holding @BJP4India accountable, Para appears more focused on weakening the opposition narrative thereby trying to give the Modi regime an escape route.

The Muslim Conference was converted into the National Conference by Sheikh Abdullah with the support extended by leaders like Gandhi and Nehru, not by Allama Iqbal. For this, he embraced a new ideological framework "Kashmiriyat" at the cost of remaining dominant in Kashmir's political landscape.
This marked the birth of Kashmiriyat, an ideological shift that replaced the earlier framework of Muslim consciousness. The alignment of Sheikh Abdullah with this framework played a decisive role in this ideological replacement of rejecting the Muslim League’s Two-Nation Theory.
One of most important outcome of historical significance for Kashmir that came out after the Glancy commission report (1931-32) on discrimination faced by muslims which exposed the systemic oppression faced by the Muslim population under the Hindu Dogra ruling class was formation of J&K Muslim Conference in 1932, a party centred around the cause of Muslims.
This was the first ever mass movement in modern history of Kashmir emerged that gave vocabulary & structure to nascent Muslim consciousness, BUT when everyone was conceivable that this movement might eventually evolve into a Muslim nationalist movement, this did not happen. Instead, the SHEIKH ABDULLAH changed the ideological framework rooted in Muslim consciousness of that time & replaced by a new framework by converting Muslim Conference into the National Conference.
With this conversion, Sheikh Abdullah buried J&K Muslim Conference, initially created to explicitly represent Muslim identity, by transforming into the J&K National Conference in 1939. This conversion almost killed the space for any strong Muslim political organisation & was the verdict against the framework of "Religion as nationality."
The decision for the Muslim-majority region of Kashmir to accede to India was influenced by this transformation that the NC, under Sheikh Abdullah’s leadership, remained dominant in Kashmir’s political landscape. This dominance was maintained for years & years.
But in 1944, Sheikh Abdullah sought approval from Muhammad Ali Jinnah to gauge whether his party, the National Conference, or the Muslim Conference was more popular among Muslims in Kashmir. This raises a crucial question: if Abdullah later rejected the Two-Nation Theory and aligned with secular nationalism, why did he seek Jinnah’s approval in the first place? The invitation was a strategic move to assert Kashmiri autonomy, and showcase Abdullah’s focus on addressing class-based oppression over religion-based identity.
It is paradoxical that Sheikh Abdullah and the NC, despite their opposition to the oppressive Dogra regime, eventually became more acceptable to the Hindu Maharaja than organizations like the Musim Conference. The latter, despite being exclusively Muslim in membership and advocating for Muslim nationality, was sidelined in favor of the National conference.
In this entire process of transformation , the Kashmiriyat framework was sold as the dominant alternative. This shaped Kashmiri politics for years to come, but the cosmetic use of Kashmiriyat failed to reflect the common will of all masses. Instead, contradictions emerged, and Muslim consciousness remained a persistent force in Kashmiri politics.

From 1947 till this day, whenever the NC is questioned about the crimes it inflicted on the people of Kashmir, it uses the accession with India as a shield & instantly brands you as anti-national.
Let the facts be put straight today: the first person who went against India was not Syed Ali Shah Geelani or Maqbool Bhat, but Sheikh Abdullah himself. Way back in the 1950s, it was he who sowed the seeds of separatism among the people, and then used it as a bargaining chip to blackmail Delhi that either he remains in power, or Kashmir will not stay with India.
Today, on the same old playbook, the NC ecosystem is telling Delhi that only they are Indians and the rest of Kashmir is anti-national. Here is a brief history of the contradictions of the Abdullah-led NC and how it used both Delhi and the people of Kashmir.
1) Isn't the very foundation of NC's politics rooted in anti-Hindu sentiment, when in 1931 Sheikh Abdullah mobilised Muslims against the Dogra Maharaja in the name of religion?
2) Didn't Sheikh Abdullah start backchannel contacts with Pakistan and the US for self-determination and independence just 7-8 years after J&K merged with India?
3) Isn't it a historical fact that NC backed the Plebiscite Front from 1953 to 1975? Wasn't that the first ever separatist movement against India? Wasn't Syed Ali Geelani himself a product of this Plebiscite Front politics?
4) Didn't NC use the state machinery in 1979 to crush its opponents — torturing religious people, burning the Quran, killing and disappearing people — and then sold the narrative that it was India that committed these crimes?
5) Didn't NC and Congress rob the public mandate in broad daylight in 1987? Didn't they torture, humiliate and terrorise those who dared to challenge them within the democratic mainstream, and then made people believe that it was India as a country doing this?
6) Didn't NC create the Ikhwan and use them to loot, rape and kill with impunity? Didn't they break our youth in torture cells and then sell the lie that Delhi did it?
7) Didn't Farooq Abdullah nurture the JKLF and use them when he felt he was losing his chair, to create fear in Delhi that if he is out of power, Kashmir will slip out of India's hands?
8) Didn't Farooq Abdullah in 2016 urge the Hurriyat leadership to continue the violent separatist movement and say, "We will never be free until we are united [against India], and I am asking NC workers not to stay away from the movement"?
PS: This is just the tip of the iceberg. If a Truth and Reconciliation Commission is established and a postmortem of NC's politics is done, even the sky will weep at how they ruined Kashmir.
They destroyed our past, mortgaged our future and are criminalising our present. They made Delhi suspicious of Kashmir and made Kashmiris suspicious of Delhi. For 75 years, Kashmiris paid the price in blood, in graves, in jails, in half-widows and orphans, while the Abdullah clan built palaces over our pain. The time has come to reclaim Kashmir for Kashmiris & re-engage with Delhi. We need a Messiah to do this.
Since you have been demolished by @javeddar786 sb and you are now going into history, let's start from 1947.
Let us presume that Farooq Abdullah was at fault.Let me ask you: what was the crime of Mehraj Malik when they tried to heckle and humiliate him inside the Legislative Assembly complex at Jammu ? How can they dare to heckle a sitting MLA inside the Legislative Assembly complex for his utterances? I know his remarks may have hurt PDP guys, but that was not a civilised way to deal with anyone. The heckling of the legislator was an insult to every native of Jammu & Kashmir.
How would you or I feel if anyone talked to our parents in such a harsh tone, even if they are in public life? I would never allow anyone to behave in this manner with my near and dear ones.
I would expect @MehboobaMufti Sahiba to at least disassociate herself from the act. These actions would further squeeze her political space. Can she now afford to talk about forging unity?

@OmarAbdullah You can’t even ask for restoration of statehood, forget autonomy or restoration of article 370, stop fooling people with your emotional slogans,
Rationalisation of reservation is much under your domain and needs urgent attention even more then restoration of statehood, the youth of Kashmir are reeling under uncertainty due unemployment and unfair reservation rules.
Pay heed to the concerns of the youth instead of reducing everything to emotional slogans.
OMAR REVIVES NC'S "GREATER AUTONOMY" DEMAND AFTER 26 YEARS
For the first time in the last 26 years, the National Conference party/Government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today formally demanded "Restoration of Greater Autonomy" to Jammu and Kashmir. It's one step up the semiautonomous "Special Status as per Article 370 and 35-A", two steps up the demand of "Statehood" and three steps up the "Union Territory status".
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, rather than demanding the "Greater Autonomy" directly, clubbed the resolution of the demand of "Greater Autonomy", as passed unanimously with two-third majority by both Houses of the J&K Legislature in June 2000, with the two resolutions of the demand of "full Statehood" as passed by the UT Assembly in 2024 and 2026.
Omar moved the unscheduled resolution in the Assembly seeking the House submit it to the Government of India. Greater Autonomy means the pre-1953 Status in which Jammu and Kashmir had a special status, its head of State was titled as Sadr-e-Riyasat" to be elected by MLAs, head of the government was titled as "Prime Minister", J&K had its own Constitution and flag. Besides, the Government of India had control of only the portfolios of Defence, External Affairs and Communication. Initially even the Supreme Court of India and Election Commission of India had also no jurisdiction on J&K but their jurisdiction was later extended.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed the Greater Autonomy resolution unanimously on 26 June 2000. Even the 8 MLAs of BJP voted for it. It was also passed by the Legislative Council. However, it was rejected as "unacceptable" by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's Cabinet in July 2000.

Waiting in an NIA court Srinagar, facing yet another hearing in a UAPA case, when I should be sitting in the Assembly, speaking for the people.
Perhaps this is the cruelest irony of our reality.
We have elections.
We have a government.
We have an Assembly.
We have the appearance of normalcy.
And yet, beneath that fragile surface, there is a Kashmir carrying years of grief, fear, silence and unanswered questions.
For the ordinary Kashmiri, life has become a strange paradox: so much changes, and yet nothing truly changes.
The calendar moves. Governments change. Elections happen. Institutions reopen.
But the wounds remain.
Today is my birthday.
And perhaps birthdays are not always meant for celebration. Some are meant for reckoning.
To ask ourselves why we were born, what we are meant to stand for, and whether we have the courage to carry the pain of our people without looking away.
If I have to spend my birthday in a courtroom instead of the Assembly, let it at least remind me of this:
We are not born merely to live through history. We are born to speak when history becomes unbearable for our people.

On 5 August 2019, Ladakh was carved out as a Union Territory without a legislature without elected MLAs, a CM or an Assembly. Yet, with barely 3 lakh people and very little political space, its leadership has secured 16 rounds of dialogue with the GoI and pushed for restoration of a legislature, constitutional safeguards under Article 371, new districts, a new division, job security and even a High Court.
That is a significant political effort and a step towards reclaiming what was lost.
Compare this with J&K, which has a 90-member Assembly, an elected government, a CM and a full Cabinet, yet appears politically paralysed.
For seven decades, J&K has watched its constitutional position erode through successive amendments and changes. We never seriously reclaimed, as a state, what was lost. Knowing this history, the first priority after elections should have been political outreach to center on the larger question of restoring constitutional rights and guarantees not merely the Rules of Business.
And this should never have been a one-party exercise. The CM should have personally initiated an all-party political committee and taken a joint J&K delegation to Delhi. Instead, the approach often appeared centred on individual and party outreach.
The erosion may have begun under the BJP, but the elected government will also be judged on what it did or failed to do — to reverse its normalisation.
Worse, political differences were allowed to become personal. Its own MP was pushed aside after raising uncomfortable questions, while Aga Ruhullah was isolated despite repeatedly reminding the government of its own manifesto commitments.
The most unfortunate moment was the refusal to seriously engage with former CM Mehbooba Mufti’s proposal for a joint delegation to the PM and HM to revive the political process, along the lines of the dialogue being pursued for Ladakh.
This is bigger than elections or one party winning and another losing. It is about whether J&K’s political class can rise above ego, arrogance and partisan interests when the stakes are generational.
J&K is at the edge. Perhaps this failure is not deliberate. But its consequences will be real and our future generations will have to live with them.
