Lots of gold in this thread from one of the good guys…
This week I celebrate 25 years in startup land. Here are 25 lessons I have learned. Some came easy. Most were hard-earned.

This is a different perspective on the RSE schemes that I heard often when in Samoa recently. Also the hollowing out of traditional village life as the young men leave… i.stuff.co.nz/pou-tiaki/1311…

I fly almost every week and literally can’t remember the last time my @FlyAirNZ flight left on time. Would also be nice if they didn’t wait until we’ve already rushed to the airport to notify us of their “operational requirements”

Serato is a great kiwi success story, and this is an absolute KILLER product. I decided to tinker with DJing last year. Ability to create instrumentals + acapella on the fly is a game changer for beginners or pros
Lot of Kiwis are unaware of the scale and global success of Auckland-based Serato, which has just released a new feature for breaking a song into its individual components in real-time nzherald.co.nz/business/nz-d…

People are happier to help than we expect. Data: we overestimate how inconvenienced they’ll feel—and underestimate how valued they’ll feel. Asking isn't always a burden. It's often an opportunity to help others feel capable and useful. Seeking help is an expression of trust.

Can anyone explain to me the logic of reporting people who did NOT die of COVID as COVID-related deaths? I really want to be supportive of the government efforts but these sorts of things just destroy credibility

This is a stark assessment of the economic transformation from COVID in NZ (which will persist much longer than the pandemic). Critical work by @bernardchickey that I support by subscribing to thekaka.substack.com/. Highly recommend.

Super interested to see NCEA results (esp exams) for Auckland vs Rest of NZ stratified by socioeconomic status. Any NZ academics prepping to analyse this natural experiment?
#OnThisDay - ‘BLACK SATURDAY’ - 28 December 1929. NZ military police fired on Mau Independence demonstrators in Apia, killing 11 Samoans, including the independence leader Tupua Tamasese Lealofi III who was the leader of the 2nd wave of the Mau Independence movement in Samoa.

Germany’s @BioNTech_Group says it takes ~2 weeks to establish whether the new strain eludes the vaccine. If a new vaccine is needed, it can be developed within 6 weeks and the first batches will be delivered within 100 days.

Can anyone point me to any limits on private social gatherings under the new COVID framework? Not stated explicitly here covid19.govt.nz/alert-levels…

Lots of sensationalist headlines and forecasts about COVID. Here are some facts: Number of people in hospital declining, lowest in 2 weeks Only 5 cases in ICU. rnz.co.nz/news/in-depth/4508…

A future that gets me excited!
Some said an open-world experience this immersive wasn’t possible. But it’s already here. And you don’t even need silly VR headsets. Introducing, ✨Icelandverse✨ #icelandverse

This is so special. Most Samoans have a story like this. I was privileged because my dad managed to get out of the back breaking work himself, so we always saw a bright future. I try to remind myself what that must have taken. Respect to those grinding it out now.
As a teacher and as a Polynesian man. This speaks volumes 🔥🔥. I think it’s always important to talk to your students straight as well as their folks! #UsoOlive

Only 6 people in NZ ICUs with COVID. No change, in spite of 540% increase in cases. This is great news!! Vax works, system is coping. Would be great to see media reporting and govt comms reflect this rather than scary (and irrelevant) case numbers

By the end of Nov, Akld (home), Chch (job), and Wgtn (where my extend family is) will all be over 90% double vaxxed. I could fly between these cities without entering any other regions. But I won't be allowed to until late January???
My very smart colleagues have built a tool that projects when each DHB will hit 90% double jabbed. On current rates Auckland’s three DHBs could do it by the end of Nov, South Island by 8 Jan, NZ by 18 Jan i.stuff.co.nz/national/healt…
