Lex Fridman interviews a PHP security researcher
Lex: My guest today discovered a critical vulnerability in PHP. What is a vulnerability.
Researcher: A weakness that allows an attacker to compromise a system.
Lex: But aren't we all vulnerable.
Researcher: Yes, but
Lex: Is love a vulnerability.
Researcher: We're talking about remote code execution.
Lex: Could an attacker remotely execute love.
Researcher: No.
Lex: Stalin executed millions.
Researcher: What does that have to do with
Lex: Do you think Stalin was happy.
Researcher: I have absolutely no idea.
Lex: Fascinating. We're 3 hours in. Let's talk about consciousness.

Oh my, programming languages, whether you consider them ugly or beautiful, AI has already thrown them all out with the bathwater and flushed them down the sewer.
I called someone’s baby ugly and now I’m old and unskilled 😂
Over the past few weeks I’ve critiqued Go and Rust and had many personal attacks lodged at me. I know this is twitter and there isn’t centralized response coordination. But seeing a lot of vitriol from these communities doesn’t inspire me to want to use those languages.

Formal methods are extremely hard, not least because there is a fundamental tension between expressiveness and verification. The easier it is to check that the spec reflects the intent, the harder it is to check that the program reflects the spec (and vice versa). THERE IS ALWAYS SEMANTIC SLIPPAGE. Formal methods are important tools for AI safety, but I don’t think they are as much of a silver bullet as some hope. They might make exploits harder to spot while creating a false sense of security, thus making the system more fragile as a whole.
“Out in the wild, most systems are very un-specifiable, and that’s a big problem if we want to formally verify a lot more of the world.”
Pretty much sums up my skepticism about people (and companies) saying we’ll verify all software.

just realized I havent thought about type systems in maybe 6 months?
crazy how much time and thought I once put into them. I remember distinctly showing a friend in college how to do addition in the typescript type system and blowing their mind... how things have changed man

hello there the jacobian conjecture is false thanx to my close friend akhil for asking about it and my other close friend fable for working during the world cup final
((1+xy)^3 z + y^2 (1+xy) (4+3xy), y + 3 x (1+xy)^2 z + 3 x y^2 (4+3xy), 2 x - 3 x^2 y - x^3 z): \C^3\to \C^3, has jacobian determinant -2, and sends (0, 0, -1/4), (1, -3/2, 13/2), and (-1, 3/2, 13/2) to (-1/4, 0, 0)

A huge amount of the Anti-AI code sentiment massively overestimates the quality of human code outside of a very small set of open source and high quality company codebases. Human Slop is everywhere and can trivially be improved on by any opus level model.

One of the only times I remind people I have a PhD in computational neuroscience is when people without a neuroscience background say their model works "like the brain." In these cases, I put on my neuroscience hat, put on my PhD cloak, and say in my important voice: "No, your model is not behaving like the brain."
