Waaaaayy back in 2016, we shared a roadmap to mark HTTP as "Not Secure" and help nudge the web toward HTTPS by default: blog.chromium.org/2016/09/mo… Here is a picture of our kick-off cake! 🔐🍰 A decade later, HTTPS is the standard—and today @googlechrome is enabling proactive warnings before insecure HTTP connections. 🧵

We've expanded Core Web Vitals to include special support for soft navigation (SPA)! Since SPAs are handled differently in their implementation, they've required bespoke custom measurement, making it hard to compare directly across sites. Measuring performance is a little art, a little science. Over time, we've evolved CVW to best fit how the web is written, and we've found that giving SPAs their own unique metrics has had the best outcome. Chrome is taking another big step toward providing a clearer picture of real user experiences on the web. Today, in the Chrome User Experience Report, we added experimental versions of Core Web Vitals with soft navigation measurements included. This comes on the heels of releasing two new APIs, DevTools and web-vitals.js upgrades that enable the ecosystem to measure soft navigations easily and comparably. My colleague Annie wrote a helpful post to build understanding about what measuring soft navigations means. web.dev/blog/crux-experiment…

This is a helpful overview of the ad experience metrics we launched a few weeks ago in the Chrome User Experience Report. If you're curious and you prefer video explanations to written docs, this one's for you.
Google has introduced a new set of performance metrics providing insight into how ads impact page speed. This video explains what the metrics measure and how to view ad performance data in Chrome DevTools. youtube.com/watch?v=LTNg45Qp…

I'm excited about the potential performance impacts! Faster for users. Better for sites.
Nice case study from PayPal on WebMCP: - Reduced Agent Compute Resources: Approximately 4.6 times less costly in model-inference usage when completing checkout. - Faster E2E Checkout Completion: Approximately twice as fast at the median with WebMCP enabled. - A More Consistent Experience: Using three structured tool calls via WebMCP instead of more than 30 interface-interaction steps with the feature disabled.

1/ Did you know Chrome publishes aggregated data about real web UX? As of today, the report where you find speed, responsiveness & stability metrics is getting 4 experimental ad experience-related metrics: avg ad count, avg ad density & total weight (network, cpu).

3/ I’m encouraged because everyone I’ve spoken to about this, including publishers of all sizes, thinks there’s merit to the hypothesis that improving ad experiences can benefit everyone: users, advertisers and publishers. Measuring is a key step to change.

🎈 Chrome turns 18 today! From our early Windows XP launch to reaching billions across mobile platforms, it’s been an incredible journey. We couldn't have done it without the global developer community. What’s your favorite feature or memory from developing for Chrome over the years?

As someone who works on a browser and thinks about the open web every day, I am inspired by folks like @pbannist who think differently than the current meme. They are out there. You just have to look for them.
I would argue that the open web isn't dead and it won't die. It will be smaller (it already is) but it will also be better. The headwinds it faces are filtering out the best from the rest (although there will be collateral damage), and that will make it better. 1/

We will know we reached the AI singularity in advertising when AI figures out measurement.
