Don’t be the sales guy who writes an 8 paragraph manifesto to your boss asking for a bunch of stuff. I’ve seen this way too many times, and it almost always does more harm than good Here’s how to ask for something from your boss in an email: -use bullet formatting -start with the ask, don’t bury the lead -provide 2-3 sentences of context (if necessary) laying out the problem being solved -describe why this solves the problem -describe what the implications are for your boss and/or the business if you don’t get what you’re asking for -stick to facts & avoid emotional editorializing -end with gratitude

America has 16,876 machine shops. 83% employ fewer than 20 people. Just nine employ more than 500. New defense companies are moving from prototypes to mass production, and every missile, drone, ship, and rocket they ultimately produce needs to run through one of these small shops. That friction is a national security liability. Connor Love and Collen Larson on the next generation of American manufacturing that gets built by smoothing it: a16z.news/p/the-case-for-the…

Isembard Founder & CEO @AFitzgerald1992 shares how the company is building a new industrial base involving software, talent and franchising: "Rather than go set up a McDonald's franchise, you could go set up and own your own factory making rocket parts." "There's that scene from the Founder, that movie about McDonald's, where he's like, 'What makes an American town is the flag, the church house, the courthouse,' and he was saying the McDonald's, but my argument is it'll be an Isembard factory." "There's this product layer of products, whether it's an Apple iPhone or a drone. They all need to be made by the component manufacturing layer." "90% of the components in all these critical industries are made by small, medium-sized businesses." "We're building a new industrial base through, one, software robotics; two, really talented people; and then third is actually like our unique business model, which is franchising."

This is peak urbanism imo. Bringing factories back into cities will tap into far more competitive labour markets than the bau model of out of town business parks The trick now is to anchor new town and city extensions around new factories and workplaces
