Major historical Jewish communities of Lite, (Lithuania). • Vilnius (Vilna / Vilne) — “Jerusalem of Lithuania,” major center of Torah study, Yiddish culture, and the Vilna Gaon. • Kaunas (Kovno / Kovne) — Second-largest community; important industrial and cultural hub; site of the Ninth Fort massacres. • Panevėžys (Ponevezh / Ponivezh) — Famous for the Ponevezh Yeshiva. • Šiauliai (Shavl / Shavel). • Telšiai (Telz) — Home of the renowned Telz Yeshiva. • Ukmergė (Vilkomir). • Marijampolė (Mariampol). • Alytus (Alite). • Kėdainiai (Keidan). • Biržai (Birzh). • Plungė (Plungyan). • Rokiškis (Rakishok). • Kelmė (Kelm). • Jurbarkas (Yurburg). • Šeduva (Shadeve). • Žagarė (Zhager). • Jonava (Yonava). • Kupiškis (Kupishok). • Utena (Utyan). • Anykščiai (Aniksht). • Klaipėda (Memel) — Smaller community in the former German area. Dozens more smaller towns (e.g., Balbieriškis/Balbirishok, Darbėnai/Dorbyan, Raseiniai/Rasein, Šiluva/Shidleve, Varniai/Vorne, and many others) had active Jewish communities with synagogues, schools, and markets.
What are Litvaks? Litvaks are the Jews of historic “Liteh”, (Yiddish) the old Grand Duchy of Lithuania. That area covered modern Lithuania, much of Belarus, and parts of Poland and Latvia. Vilna was their main city and was called the Jerusalem of Lithuania. Their defining figure was the Vilna Gaon, Rabbi Elijah ben Solomon Zalman (1720 to 1797). He was a major Talmud scholar who favored precise study over clever wordplay. He also opposed the new Hasidic movement with its focus on rebbes and emotional prayer. The Jews who followed his path became known as Misnagdim, or opponents. They stressed rigorous Torah learning and tended to question authority rather than accept it unquestioningly. This culture produced the great yeshivas. Volozhin was founded in 1803 by the Gaon’s student Chaim of Volozhin and set the model. Mir, Slabodka, Telz, and others followed. Lithuania became the center of advanced Jewish scholarship. The later Musar movement added serious work on ethics and character. The same critical spirit also produced many leading maskilim of the Jewish Enlightenment, including writers such as Avraham Mapu and Yehudah Leib Gordon. Jewish folklore described Litvaks as having big heads and small guts. They were seen as rational, skeptical, critical and hard to impress. Their Yiddish sounded different from other dialects. The Holocaust destroyed most of this world. Lithuania had roughly 200,000 Jews before the war. After the German invasion in 1941, mass shootings killed about 90 to 95 percent of them, one of the highest rates in Europe. Sites such as Ponary near Vilna and the Ninth Fort near Kaunas saw tens of thousands murdered, often with local collaborators. Vilna’s synagogues, yeshivas and cultural institutions were wiped out. The approach to learning survived. The Litvak style of analytical Talmud study still shapes much of the non Hasidic yeshiva world in Israel and the United States. Large communities in South Africa and elsewhere kept the identity alive. The place was destroyed but the intellectual tradition was not. Curious about Jewish History? Follow for more!

If you want to understand modern antisemitism, you need to go back to Moscow in 1982. This is the cover of Mahmoud Abbas’s thesis, later published as The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism. Abbas is not just another Palestinian politician. He is the President of the Palestinian Authority, Chairman of the PLO, and the man Western governments have treated for decades as a partner for peace. Yet Abbas wrote his thesis in the Soviet Union, promoting Holocaust distortion and the antisemitic conspiracy theory that Zionists collaborated with the Nazis. But the story goes much further. Documents from the Mitrokhin Archive identified Abbas as a KGB agent in Damascus in 1983, operating under the codename “Krotov,” meaning “Mole.” Think about what this means: The man who leads the PLO today was KGB agent. For decades, the Soviet Union weaponized the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It supported Palestinian organizations and systematically repackaged antisemitism in the language of anti-Zionism, anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism. Abbas emerged from this Soviet political environment and maintained close relations with Moscow. Russia continues to exploit the Palestinian issue to expand its influence, destabilize Western societies and undermine Western alliances. And here is what I find extraordinary. The West has allowed itself to be overwhelmed by a political narrative shaped by one of the most successful and enduring influence campaigns in modern history. An entire generation has been taught to see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through an ideological framework that was cultivated decades ago by Soviet propaganda. Today, that framework has found powerful new allies in the Red-Green alliance between radical progressive movements and Islamist organizations. The accusations have barely changed. Zionists are Nazis. Israel is responsible for the world’s suffering. Jews are portrayed as powerful conspirators controlling governments, media and wars. What Soviet propaganda once spread through political organizations, universities and intelligence networks is now amplified by social media algorithms, influencers, university campuses and mass demonstrations across Western cities. The technology has changed. The distribution has accelerated. But the ideological foundations remain remarkably familiar. And the most disturbing part? Many Western institutions, politicians and intellectuals have embraced elements of this narrative without questioning where it came from or whose geopolitical interests it serves. The Palestinian cause has become far more than a national movement. It has also been exploited as an instrument of ideological warfare against Israel, Jews and the democratic West. Abbas’s 1982 thesis is not simply a disturbing historical document. It is a window into the ideological origins of a campaign whose influence we continue to witness today.

From Convenient to Condemned: The Jewish Moneylenders’ Status and Role in Medieval Europe This paper will examine the role and status of the Jewish moneylender in Medieval European society using various course materials and articles. The figure of the Jewish moneylender was not an ancient stereotype, but a role produced by Christian legal and theological constraints and the monetary needs of the emerging early Capitalist system. The supersessionist logic advanced by Augustine had already provided a durable theological foundation for the charges that Jews were obstinate and blind. In Answer to the Jews had described Jews as the branches that had been stripped off for their unbelief (Romans 11) and framed them as having remained in “useless antiquity” for their refusal to recognise Christ as the fulfilment of the prophecies in the Old Testament and of administering the law while scorning the Gospel in an act of witness against themselves.[1] Christian opposition to usury reinforced this existing framework. From late antiquity Ambrose, Jerome and Augustine condemned the practice of moneylending for interest. The Third Lateran Council of 1179 and the Fourth Lateran Council of 1215 intensified the ban, forbidding Christians to lend at interest and imposing social and economic sanctions on Jews that did so. However, credit remained essential and legitimate sources from Christians were forbidden so Jews enjoyed a short period where their money lending was vital as the source of credit for the emerging system of trade. The collapse of Jewish long-distance trade after the First Crusade left many Jews with few alternative sources of income. Rulers then extracted tallages from the communities forced to keep capital liquid which created a vicious cycle: society relied upon the Jew becoming a usurer and then condemned him for this role. By the twelfth century the words “Jew” and “Usurer” had become almost synonymous. Passion plays from the period cast Judas as a haggling Jewish moneylender while art showed the devil as a partner in Jewish finance. As Joshua Trachtenberg argued: the Devil, Jew, usurer and heretic became “one and the same creature.” The broken branch as framed by Augustine had acquired an economic dimension.[2] The events at Clifford’s Tower, York in 1190 show the societal response to this pattern and its violent consequences. Amid Crusading riots, approximately 150 Jewish residents of York took refuge in Clifford’s tower when indebted local Barons exploited the absence of Royal authority to effectively cancel their debts. A contemporary account by William of Newburgh describes that after the mob surrounding the castle demanded the Jews to convert or die that the vast majority inside chose to commit suicide rather than forced Baptism, and survivors who accepted conversion were killed by the mob and upon the death of all the Jews the debt records stored in York Minster were burned. The cancellation of obligations to settle the debt was accompanied by religious rhetoric about the enemies of Christ. Similar attacks, fuelled by debt occurred in England between 1189-1190 and had occurred earlier on the Continent. The 1290 expulsion under Edward I removed the creditors and the debt obligation permanently and Jewish property and assets were seized upon expulsion. The events at Clifford’s Tower represent an early, local example of a logic that was later systematised.[3] [4] Three centuries later in Spain, the Alhambra Decree of 31 March 1492 achieved the same economic result via legislation. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella ordered unconverted Jews to leave by the end of July 1492, forbidding the export of gold, silver or coin and cancelling all Royal debts to Jewish creditors. The stated reason was religious subversion, but the practical effect was the cancellation of Jewish credit and the forcible transfer of assets.

Why am I so unsurprised?
Italian police arrested a 30-year-old pro-Palestinian activist on Saturday. The suspect allegedly organized the riots across the country and incited violence. According to Italian media, the suspect was known to the country's domestic intelligence service after founding an organization that spread propaganda identified with the IRGC-backed terrorist organization Hamas.

Oh well, Europe. You were warned countless times. When you allow youth to march for terrorists for 3 years straight, you can expect radicalisation. This is the fruit of your apathy, I'm afraid.
Wow. What the fuck. This is Albania right now. Seriously what the fuck.
