🚨 Sir Alex Ferguson’s emotional letter to Cristiano Ronaldo following his retirement from international football:
🎙️ “Cristiano,
I don’t know if you will ever fully understand what you have meant to football, to Manchester United, to Portugal, and most importantly, to me.
When you first walked into my office as a young boy from Sporting Lisbon, I saw something special. I saw hunger, confidence, courage and a boy who believed he could become the best in the world. But even I couldn’t have imagined the heights you would eventually reach.
I remember the young boy who wanted to take on every defender, who stayed behind after training and who was never satisfied with being good enough. Sometimes I had to remind you that football was a team game, but I never wanted to take away that fire inside you.
Today, as you close another chapter of your international career, I want you to know that you have given your country something that cannot be measured in goals or trophies.
You gave Portugal belief. You carried the hopes of millions, you cried for your country, you fought for your country, and you eventually gave them a European Championship. You made an entire generation believe that nothing was impossible.
I have watched you grow from that talented young boy into a man who has challenged the limits of this beautiful game. And I must tell you something: I am proud of you.
People will argue about who was the greatest. They will compare your records, trophies and achievements. But when I look at you, I don’t just see a footballer. I see a young boy who refused to surrender his dreams.
You may be saying goodbye to international football, but you will never say goodbye to the memories you have given us.
And if I could speak to that 18-year-old boy I brought to Manchester all those years ago, I would tell him one thing:
‘You have no idea how many lives you are about to touch.’
But there is one thing I must say. I don’t believe this is how your international journey should have ended. A player who has given so much to his country deserves a much greater honour and farewell. You deserved to walk away with an entire nation celebrating your extraordinary contribution to Portuguese football.
Portugal owes you more than a goodbye, Cristiano. You deserve a farewell worthy of a king.
Thank you, Cristiano. It was an honour to be your manager, but it was an even greater privilege to watch you become the man you are today.
You will always be my boy, Cristiano.”

Remembering the late, great, Les Murray today, on what would have been his 81st birthday. 🍷

A reminder to the football community that it was old mate’s birthday today, Laszlo Urge, perhaps better known as Les Murray.
Still missed by all who knew him.
Sorely missed in Australian football, that’s for sure.
A voice of passion, education, ambition, reason and accountability over many decades.
It was a great pleasure to spend many hours of a Sunday, and countless in between, as well as memorable World Cup journeys for Korea/Japan 2002, and in Germany 06, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 chatting all things football.
He was one of the best of his time, anywhere, and Australian football was fortunate to have him.
On his final World Cup show in 2014 in our studio on Copacabana beach where jogo bonito was born, as his eyes filled with memories, emotions and tears, I presented him with a Garrincha Botafogo shirt, his favourite player, the ‘little bird’ who played to thrill the fans and danced and swayed his way to two FIFA mundials.
Les never forgot those times, or those feelings, and wanted Australia to understand and fully embrace the beautiful game, or world game, as he called it.
The game would do very well to understand the past, those that came before, and to live up to this legacy.
RIP old mate.
