Judicial education & training is a specialised field and we just haven’t paid it enough attention in India.
What we severely lack in those fields, cannot be offset by setting a 3-yr practice rule to become judges.
Wrong solution to a very serious problem.
My last research project at NLU Delhi looked at criminal cases against journalists across India between 2012 - 22.
It must worry us how criminal law is being used to hollow out the freedom of the press.

The offences being used, the weaponisation of criminal procedure against journalists, all presented in the garb of ‘legality’, the terrible vulnerability of local journalists in non-metro towns and villages - and it is not just a few states!!

Was a brilliant experience working with Anwesha Choudhury as the research lead at NLU Delhi and student researchers + Maneka Khanna and Stephen Townley at @ClooneyFDN + @tjesrani at the Columbia Human Rights Institute

Our past work was cited by the Sup Ct, Law Commn, in parl debates, and UN reports.
Alongside existing areas, wrongful convictions and science & tech in crim justice will be our focus.
Consider applying to our research team - to be part of cutting edge crim justice research.
🚨 Hiring! The Square Circle Clinic, NALSAR is looking for 2 researchers to join us in New Delhi! Head to linktr.ee/thesquarecirclecli… to know more.
All team members currently at @sqcircleclinic were involved in criminal justice work as Project 39A and moved to NALSAR in April 2025.
Ultimately the judicial legacy of a judge must be assessed by what is done in court. The legacy of Justice Sanjiv Khanna is not simple or one-sided - but credit must be given that there was no attempt to create a legacy through continuous commentary outside the courtroom.
The death penalty is often imposed on the poorest with barely any meaningful legal representation.
Our effort to represent death row prisoners has resulted in 27 acquittals and 51 commutations in the Sup Ct and HCs.
Do consider joining us in this work:

Events involving Ranveer Allahbadia, Kunal Kamra, the Malayalam film Empuraan — a crash course on the freedom of speech in India.
NLU Delhi was my first job and after nearly 13 yrs, I am moving on.
I will be joining @NALSAR_Official.
All staff at Project 39A have also moved and we will be setting up the @sqcircleclinic at NALSAR to continue our crim justice work out of Delhi, Hyd, Pune, and Nagpur.
The reality is that a lot more people will now look up the Tamil weekly Vikatan’s website and their Modi - Trump cartoon because of the Govt of India banning their website.
Classic Streisand Effect.
The extent of police action around comments by @BeerBicepsGuy must worry us.
When offending sentiments becomes the basis for criminal action - unjustified intrusion by the state is at our doorstep. No exaggeration to say “it could be you”.
Certainly not a @BeerBicepsGuy fan.

Former Project 39A colleagues, @Adrijaghosh06 and @zebasikora have been published in @IndianLawReview. Their article focuses on the unprincipled nature of capital sentencing that exists in the Supreme Court. Find the abstract here: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
With all the deserved celebration around Nitish Kumar Reddy, let’s just hope they treat him better than Karun Nair.
Remember him? Converted his maiden ton in his 3rd test into a triple century- only Sobers and Simpson in that club. Just 3 tests for Karun Nair after that.

After 11 years of incarceration and 3 trials, the same court that sentenced Anokhilal to death twice acquitted him with exonerating DNA evidence. Watch @umangpod and @antarikshjain's report for @bbcindia featuring @shreyarastogi30 about Anokhilal's fight. youtu.be/orI8DRAZyD4
