Our Office of Divine Worship explains why the faithful should refrain from extending their hands during the Our Father at Mass: "Further, the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, states that “no other person, even if he be a priest, may add, remove, or change anything in the liturgy on his own authority.” (SC 22.3) Since the GIRM is very specific that the priest is instructed by the GIRM (152) to extend his hands when he prays the Lord’s Prayer, for the deacons or the laity to extend their hands would be adding to the liturgy. Therefore, the practice of the lay faithful extending their hands (or holding hands) during the Our Father should not be done." Read more: archdpdx.org/news/divine-wor…

I'm picturing John Roberts walking into a swanky cocktail party in DC. He hasn't been in years. Since the Dobbs affair as they call it. But as he enters a man in a monacle raises his dry martini and shouts: We Stand for John! Huzzah! And then all stand as the huzzahs ring out. A tear escapes his left eye as he nods and bows his head. He knows. This means he's back. And he'll be back again. A woman in a long black dress offers him an old fashioned. Is that the idea?

My father died in Japan in February and I could not get back. I told exactly one American, and only because he asked a direct question at a bad moment and I have never been able to lie fast enough. He did not say he was sorry. He said, "You busy Saturday?" I was not busy Saturday. I have not been busy on a Saturday since I arrived in this country. He wanted help moving a riding mower to the other side of his garage. The mower runs. He drove it out himself. I want to be accurate here, because I have thought about it a great deal since: the mower ended that day about two feet from where it started. We were in the garage five hours. There was a small refrigerator out there with beer in it and one orange drink belonging to his grandson, and neither of us touched the orange drink at any point. We discussed a shelf. We discussed a bolt for some time. Around one o'clock we spent close to forty minutes on the correct way to coil a hose, and he was wrong, and I told him he was wrong, and he told me to prove it, and I proved it, and he said "huh," and that was the end of it. He did not mention my father once. I had prepared for it. In my country a man in mourning is approached with fixed phrases that have been in service four hundred years, which is the entire purpose of them, and I had built mine in English over three nights. They were not good. They were ready. I never used them. I still have them written down. At six he said, "Same time next week?" We did that for five Saturdays. We moved a workbench. We rewired a light that already worked. One Saturday we sorted screws by length, which is not a job. That is somewhere to put a man. In April a neighbor three doors down lost his mother. I do not own a mower. I own a boat trailer that does not need to be moved. He came at eight. He is coming again this Saturday. I have not said one word to him about his mother and I am not going to. He knows what time.

Sad to see Patriarch Pizzaballa’s legitimate concern for the lives of Palestinians hijacked by bad faith actors to portray him as a supporter of their antisemitism. I know from people who have spoken with him that he is a firm supporter of Hebrew Catholics retaining their Jewish identity and that he supports further Hebrew enculturation within the Mass. Pizzaballa also recently wrote a positive review of From Sinai to Rome, a recent book about Hebrew Catholics edited by Angela Costley and Gavin D’Costa. He also approved the Association of Hebrew Catholics to operate in Israel. Hatred against any people, Jew or Palestinian, is wrong. May Christ the Prince of Peace end the cycle of violence and turn both sides to Him.

October 15 is the next military payday. I'm either going to the Little Creek, Norfolk or Oceana Commissary to pay the grocery bill for as many junior enlisted families as I can.

Here's my deep insight for today: Politics is determined by eye color Sexual energy is determined by hand gesture Personal ethics are revealed by the smile Emotions are shown by back posture I will not explain further.
Politics is always written on the eye color. Nikki Haley's son it's yet another example

Leo, unlike Benedict, evidently did not enter into office with a thought-out position on the traditional Latin Mass. But he also appears, unlike Francis, to have no visceral dislike of its advocates and and is open to discussion. Traditionalists must use this opportunity wisely.
Pope Leo XIV on Traditional Latin Mass: “ I have already received a number of requests and letters [about]: The question about, people always say ‘the Latin Mass.’ Well, you can say Mass in Latin right now. If it’s the Vatican II rite there’s no problem. Obviously, between the Tridentine Mass and the Vatican II Mass, the Mass of Paul VI, I’m not sure where that’s going to go. It’s obviously very complicated. I do know that part of that issue, unfortunately, has become – again, part of a process of polarization – people have used the liturgy as an excuse for advancing other topics. It’s become a political tool, and that’s very unfortunate. I think sometimes the, say, ‘abuse’ of the liturgy from what we call the Vatican II Mass, was not helpful for people who were looking for a deeper experience of prayer, of contact with the mystery of faith that they seemed to find in the celebration of the Tridentine Mass. Again, we’ve become polarized, so that instead of being able to say, well, if we celebrate the Vatican II liturgy in a proper way, do you really find that much difference between this experience and that experience? I have not had the chance to really sit down with a group of people who are advocating for the Tridentine rite. There’s an opportunity coming up soon, and I’m sure there will be occasions for that. But that is an issue that I think also, maybe with synodality, we have to sit down and talk about. It’s become the kind of issue that’s so polarized that people aren’t willing to listen to one another, oftentimes. I’ve heard bishops talk to me, they’ve talked to me about that, where they say, ‘we invited them to this and that and they just won’t even hear it’. They don’t even want to talk about it. That’s a problem in itself. It means we’re into ideology now, we’re no longer into the experience of church communion.” Ref: cruxnow.com/vatican/2025/09/…

If you returned to church because of Charlie today, please keep going even if you did not hear his name during the sermon. I understand wanting to hear it but regardless the truth is in the gospel. God wants us for Him. Charlie would want you to keep coming back.

I know everyone is reflecting on this event, and I’m not downplaying how hard it’s hitting younger people, or those without kids, but those of us who are fathers and mothers are processing it a bit differently. We see a widow raising her children alone and it’s heartbreaking. We’re imagining our own children having to grow up without a father. Our own wives being left alone to raise them. I’m on a plane right now heading home from a meeting and I’ve never wanted to hold my family more than I do right now.

Allow me to praise You, O Most holy Virgin, with my personal commitment and sacrifice. Allow me to live, work, suffer, be consumed and die for You, just for You. Allow me to bring the whole world to You. Allow me to contribute to Your ever greater exaltation, to Your greatest possible exaltation. Allow me to give You such glory that no one else has ever given You up to now. Allow others to surpass me in zeal for Your exaltation, and me to surpass them, so that by means of such noble rivalry Your glory may increase ever more profoundly, ever more rapidly, ever more intensely as He who has exalted You so indescribably above all other beings Himself desires. In You alone God is incomparably more glorified than in all His other saints. For You God has created the world. For You God has also called me to existence.
