🇫🇷 🇬🇧The V1 was heading toward a hospital. The Free French pilot chasing it was eight days away from his wedding.
On August 3, 1944, Jean Maridor intercepted a German flying bomb threatening Benenden Hospital in Kent.
The 23-year-old Free French ace flew Spitfires with No. 91 Squadron of the RAF. Credited with five aerial victories, he had also become a skilled V1 hunter. His final interception would bring his tally to seven flying bombs destroyed individually.
Four years earlier, he had escaped France to keep fighting.
Shooting down a V1 carried a deadly risk: get too close, and its exploding warhead could destroy the fighter pursuing it.
There was another way. A pilot could slide his wingtip beneath the V1’s wing, disturbing the airflow and tipping the flying bomb off balance, without necessarily touching it.
According to the Le Havre municipal archives, Maridor tried to tip the "doodlebug" but could not bring it down.
With the hospital threatened, he turned to his cannons. He closed to less than 50 meters and fired.
The V1 exploded. The blast destroyed his Spitfire. France’s Order of Liberation records his final attack as a deliberate sacrifice to save the hospital.
Before the war, Maridor worked as a barber while learning to fly and studying to qualify for military pilot training. He earned his first pilot’s certificate at sixteen.
Eight days after his final mission, he was due to marry his fiancée, Jean Lambourn, a serving officer in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
He was twenty-three. They never had their wedding.
Remember Jean Maridor.

Gen X, after growing up without the internet, living on student grants or dole money as young adults and eating 2 meals a day of the poorest quality tinned food in digs without electricity, watching the media talk about power cuts, internet blackouts and food shortages
I thought (knew, actually) that recent Tory governments were laughable, but we have reached a new peak (& likely not the last) of idiocy & incompetency.
Chancellor John Healey will remove import taxes on marmalade, gherkins and more than 100 products in a move to give families "breathing space" with the cost of living in the Budget.

W 2016 roku Land Rover zabił klasycznego Defendera. Brytyjski miliarder wkurzył się na to przy piwie, zaprojektował własną terenówkę od zera, a dziś jego autami jeździ polska Straż Graniczna.
Kiedy z taśmy w Solihull zjeżdżał ostatni prawilny Defender, Jim Ratcliffe – szef giganta chemicznego Ineos i fanatyk off-roadu – siedział ze znajomymi w londyńskim pubie The Grenadier.

Not posted food pix for a while. Leftover ragù baked in roasted peppers. Saturday with salad & bruschetta. Sunday with rosemary & garlic roasted pots, & steamed broc. Still one small portion of ragù left, 10 in total.
The airmen that had the task of carrying that baby in her tiny coffin… God love them.

This is the scandal that just keeps giving. It has emerged that national security adviser Jonathan Powell, who sits at the centre of Britain’s most sensitive intelligence and diplomatic secrets, and who happens to be married to a Gaza fanatic who has defended Hamas, was not vetted by security before he was handed the job.
The source is Morgan McSweeney, Keir Starmer’s former chief of staff, in evidence to Parliament about Peter Mandelson that came to light this week. “We made a political appointment for National Security Adviser, in Jonathan Powell,” he remarked, offhand. “As far as I remember, we appointed him and then we began the DV.”
DV stands for developed vetting, the highest routine level of security clearance. Any clearance Powell held from his days as Tony Blair’s chief of staff would have lapsed long ago; the rules require a review after seven years, and he left Downing Street in 2007. In other words, the government put a man in charge of national security first and determined that he wasn’t a security risk afterwards, just as it did with Peter Mandelson (and look how that turned out).
This is more than a procedural lapse. It is a window into how this government works: a combination of cronyism and complacency which, step by step, has allowed ideological zealotry to seep into the heart of our foreign policy. And when you look at what the vetting officers would have found had they been allowed to do their job first, it becomes clear why this matters so much...

I just learned that he has no mother or father to speak up for him. And now the Islamic Republic wants to hang him.
His name is Ilya Ben Rashid.
He is a young Iranian protester He has a younger sister. Now he is facing a death sentence.
He was arrested during the January 2026 protests in Iran. A Revolutionary Court in Isfahan sentenced him to death on charges of “waging war against God” for allegedly damaging public property.
He is being held in Dastgerd Prison. Reports say he was denied a lawyer of his choice.
Imagine facing execution for demanding freedom.
We must become his voice. We must stop his execution.
Say his name. Save Ilya Ben Rashid.

It’s so anachronistic to hear a random woman—let alone a French one—speak like this.
I can’t remember the last time I heard a white woman of any national origin speak this defiantly and bravely.
Major blancpill.
The French Minster of the Interior has, on French TV news, described those taking part in the riots as the “far left, ultra left, militants, & the radical far left”.
Could @BBCNews, @SkyNews, @itvnews, @Channel4News please report what he said?
