"News" consistently worse for mental health than "social media"?
I think consistent with Matt's point here — you see young people identifying social media as a source of worsening mental health; but also emphasizing politics and national media. iop.harvard.edu/youth-poll/s…

“Of course I know what it’s like to feel powerless and trapped. After all…” I took a deep breath. “I’m a man.”
“My beef isn't that Romantasy exists, it's that men can't have the same thing.” I got this comment after writing about Romantasy and A Court of Thorns and Roses, but they were utterly unprepared for how far I am willing to go to prove a single anonymous Internet commenter wrong.

the anthropic singularity is slightly delayed [slop]
At its current exponential growth, Anthropic's annualized revenue will hit 100% of global GDP in early 2028. Do I think this will happen? No. Is it insane that this is the current trajectory, and we should all be preparing for AI to rapidly change the world we live in? Yes.

the public is told "the current unemployment rate was about 4.2%" and still expects 8.1% unemployment in 2030 🧐 - even among non-AI-pilled 🧐
Replying to @PeterMcCrory
We find evidence that Anthropic staff and the general public have similar views on how capabilities will shape broader economic outcomes: Those who expect AI to do comparably more of their own work anticipate similar unemployment effects.

TFP in manufacturing *fell* while the US was in WWII (~1942-45) after surging during the buildup 1938-41 Plausible explanations: (1) central planning is Bad for efficiency (2) you have low productivity when producing things you've never made before (e.g. bomber planes, etc)

Or: unmeasured decline in labor quality (as working age men shipped abroad), ie TFP didn't actually fall - or other measurement issues in the price control era

folks this chart is fake, quite literally... the US does not collect this data!!! a 2022 NHTS survey is (to my knowledge) literally the ONLY official national measurement we have of rideshare VMT this chart is just something Caplan asked ChatGPT to guesstimate ...!!!!
The age of the taxi is over. The age of the ride-hail passenger carrier is now.

do people think ATUS data on TV watching legit? ATUS doesn't handle simultaneous activities very well (but maybe that makes this a lower bound)?

Quantifying the fall of European cousin marriage + rise of Church courts
For those who are interested in my work, but don't have the training or inclination to read a pretty technical paper, I'm putting out an explainer series. Check out the newest installment here, on descriptive time series with genealogical data: godbecametheglass.substack.c…
