The feast of St. John Paul II is celebrated on October 22 because it marks the anniversary of the inauguration of his pontificate in 1978.
On October 22, 1978, he celebrated the Mass inaugurating his ministry as Pope, delivering his famous appeal to the world:
“Be not afraid! Open wide the doors for Christ!”
He was elected Pope on October 16, 1978, but the Church chose October 22 as his liturgical memorial to commemorate the beginning of his papal ministry.
St. John Paul II was canonized by Pope Francis on April 27, 2014, Divine Mercy Sunday.
🙏 October 22 is therefore a day to remember his extraordinary pontificate and his call to the world to open its heart to Christ.
Praise the Lord. 😊🙏🏻💛🇻🇦
JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV’s Doctors say “no further treatment is necessary.”
@HolySeePress has just announced that Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora have issued the following statement regarding the Pope’s postoperative recovery:
“Today, the final histopathological findings and molecular biology analyses of the tissue removed during the surgical procedure performed on the Holy Father were reported. The results confirmed that the disease was a pulmonary adenocarcinoma and that it was localized. A subsequent oncological assessment confirmed that no further treatment is necessary.”

Pope Leo XIV was back riding in the Popemobile for the first time after his lung surgery and a week of convalescence, and he already had an important mission to accomplish.
During today’s General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, the Pope spotted a father running with his baby, hoping to bring the little one forward for a blessing. Leo immediately took notice, directing the father and guards to make sure the baby reached him.
The baby was wearing a Peru national team jersey, making the encounter all the more memorable.
A first ride back in the Popemobile, and the Pope was already making sure no baby missed out on a blessing.

Friends, I traveled today to the Planned Parenthood in Rochester to join a group of seminarians and lay people in praying for an end to abortion. Over the years, it has been edifying to join in prayer with 40 Days for Life and to see the progress being made to uphold the dignity of every human life. As I mentioned to our group today, we pray in our time, but the answers come in God's time. Please join me in continually petitioning the Lord to help us end the grave evil of abortion.

During today’s Angelus, Pope Leo XIV thanked everyone who prayed for him during his recovery, expressing special gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Gemelli Hospital.
He said the experience brought him closer to those facing illness and infirmity and that he will gradually resume his activities “with God’s help and your prayers.”
Let us continue to pray for Pope Leo XIV and all those who are sick.
Truth.
For decades it has been unfashionable across much of the West to discuss Christianity except in historical or condescending terms. That pattern is shifting.
Pope Leo XIV’s open-air Mass in the Place de la Concorde drew an estimated 800,000 people, filling the square and the length of the Champs-Élysées. The scale of the spontaneous assembly astonished observers in a city long marked by anti-clerical tradition.
The phenomenon is more consequential than episodic student unrest. It signals the practical exhaustion of secularist hostility to spiritual values and of progressive assumptions about the perfectibility of man. Historical experience suggests that religious vacuums tend to be filled by destructive ideologies or by charismatic pretenders to absolute authority.
In the face of demographic and cultural pressures, including militant Islam, atheism is increasingly perceived as an inadequate substitute; soulless in conception and limited in practical resilience. The recovery of respect for Judeo-Christian foundations does not imply a return to earlier forms of religious militancy. But it does indicate a renewed determination to defend the civilizational inheritance those foundations have sustained.

It’s always strange when you’re in the Rome airport and another traveler says, “Father, were you in Rome for business or personal reasons?”
Uh. I don’t think there’s a difference in my life.

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office.
Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps.
"In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

Saint Teresa of Jesus says: “Let nothing disturb you. Let nothing frighten you. Everything passes away except for God.” If we embrace her words, we will not be overwhelmed by life’s pressures. Instead, we will find serenity trusting that God’s love and protection are without end.
Dedicating my day for Pope Leo XIV. 🇻🇦✨😊💛🦁
JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV has been admitted to Gemelli Hospital and will undergo surgery this afternoon for a localized lung nodule. It will be performed by the thoracic surgery team led by Professor Stefano Margaritora.
The surgery, which is usually performed under general anesthesia, will require a weeklong hospital stay. The Vatican yesterday announced that all of the Pope’s audiences through Oct. 20 are cancelled.
@HolySeePress said further information will be provided this evening.
