Two books in my hands: Into the Woods and Into the Woods at Work. 🌲🧶
Both began, not as books, but as groups, workshops, conversations and shared reflection.
Fairy tales can help us think differently about ourselves and being human together.
And ChatGPT just did my lighting!

You gotta leave your cardigan at the office. Do not analyze your friends at dinner. Do not use the language of the consulting room on the people you love; they did not consent to be your patient, and they will feel it as an attack. This work should make you more ordinary, not less.

Read things that are not about psychoanalysis: novels, history, poetry. The unconscious does not speak in technical language. You need a wide vocabulary to hear it.

This is a dangerous profession. Not mainly because patients are dangerous, though a few are. It is dangerous because you can do great harm while believing you are helping, because no one is watching when you do it, and because several systems that reimburse it reward some of that harm.

This is totally correct. Therapists can’t risk a criminal prosecution.

No professional will counsel an effeminate young man, or a gender non conforming girl that they are perfect as they are, or that same sex attraction is natural. That will be a conversion practice. Gender affirmation practice will be official policy.

There is a deep, dark irony that lies a the heart of the Conversion Practices Bill, that will play out.
If passed, the law will end up being the largest ever driver of conversion practices for gay and lesbian young people. It will have far more negative impact that Section 28.

Ruth Hunt lies
Says half of gender nonconforming kids commit suicide
I am simply aghast that Stonewall have any public credibility after this
Simon Blake, the new CEO should address this evil lie.
Ruth Hunt of @stonewalluk promoting puberty blockers with the suicide myth in 2019.
“Suddenly Michael who has been presenting as Sarah is being forced to go through puberty… That’s where you see half of young people commit suicide.”

It has been known for a very long time Trigger warnings are not psychological protection. Research shows they don’t reduce distress or improve learning, but can increase anticipatory anxiety.

It’s seriously wild that Parliament has heard detailed statements on, amongst other things: the Holocaust, the Omagh bombing, Hillsborough, Aberfan, & the 7/7 terrorist attacks.
But the only time in 200 years they’ve needed a trigger warning was @Jebadoo2 pitching up to tell them it was wrong to sterilise autistic gay teenagers.
Language doesn’t just describe a group’s culture. It helps establish it. Language is power-coded: it signals what kind of space we’re in, who holds interpretive authority and which responses are legitimate. A gender trigger warning can organise the group before anyone speaks.

The clinical psychologist, Dr Anne Woodhouse (@Woodmoose), endured a spurious three year Fitness to Practice investigation by the HCPC before being cleared of wrongdoing.

In this final video she talks about who regulates the regulators of these professions.
"It is important to remember that regulators and their staff are not clinicians which means they do not understand what critically evaluated, evidence-based healthcare looks like. Nor do they have a functional understanding of what it is like to work as a health professional in an increasingly polarised society, of activist agendas, social media informed self-diagnoses and AI generated complaint letters."
"The @SpeechUnion advises that out of their entire casework, gender critical cases remain their highest single category. More specifically, 39% of cases come from the top eight health care regulators, and 34% of these cases are concerned with gender critical beliefs."
All of these organisations, the BPS, the BACP, the UKCP, and the HCPC, have ignored complaints. Complaints about them have also been made to @prof_standards which have been ignored. This is a monumental failure.

“The Risk is that we’re becoming a Stupidogenic Society”.
We’ve had a brilliant response to the latest episode of The Amol Rajan Connection, with @daisychristo . I’m waking up to loads of messages from teachers saying thank you, and that they’ve been thinking this for years.
Please listen to the full episode for context, pushback and a variety of other nuances. Out now on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts and Amazon.
Ok I hope this will be the most useful conversation you hear about Education this year.
This week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection (ARC) with @daisychristo of No More Marking has really struck a chord.
Anyone with kids; or who works in schools, colleges and universities; or who is interested in the very nature of learning and how the mind works; or what technology is doing to us, will enjoy this. That’s not my view alone; it’s the revealed view of the comments flooding in.
We discuss:
+ working memory vs long-term memory
+ the risk of creating a Stupidogenic Society
+ why Knowledge is Freedom
+ schools for the rich and skills for the poor
+ how to optimise vocational education
+ the implications of AI for education
+ what children should learn
+ technology and the classroom
+ Labour’s education policy
Something for your weekend perhaps.
We’d be honoured if you’d others listening to this episode.
Thanks so much for your time - and to Daisy, for a very special contribution to the ARC Universe.
Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music.
