Some investors want equity for their money. Then they want advisory shares for their advice. Then they want a board seat so they can give more advice. At some point, I wonder who's actually supposed to be running the company.

a two-year-old mining company has raised $400M. @a16z, @khoslaventures and the CIA's venture fund are all on the cap table. @jclozano9897 co-founded @MarianaMinerals with @tbc415 and @baker_tilney, two friends from stanford. it's now worth $1.6B. they buy mines after the market gives up on them, then run them with software and AI. i asked him how you actually buy a mine, why AI's real bottleneck is metal, and whether he'd hire me for being good at claude code. nontechnical, episode 3. 00:00 $400M and the CIA's venture fund 02:19 you can just buy a mine 04:41 2 years, $400M, $1.6B 08:58 cold emailing VCs vs. their first check 13:46 when to buy a mine (right after the market gives up) 19:54 every mining truck is a robot without a brain 25:08 everything human-made is grown or mined 26:15 the cheapest AI company wins 28:31 AI's real bottleneck is metal 30:55 america doesn't have enough miners 33:27 space mining and asteroids 43:13 how a $1.6B founder hires 46:17 would he hire me for claude code? 48:43 "slop cannon"

🚨 BREAKING: Today, we killed Claude Code. A highschooler can now reach +$4M/month by giving Claude full access to his Mac. 12 months ago this was straight out of a scifi horror movie. This is just absurd.

What’s new in Gstack?
gstack has evolved a lot. It's now Capy-aware (works with their Captains software factory). Garry trimmed ~1k lines of old model scaffolding since frontier models improved. Added test-audit for low-value tests, stronger /autoplan, better /cso runtime checks, multi-host support, GBrain sync, unattended modes, and daily 1.91.x fixes. Stars are past 137k. Run the upgrade to catch up.

Grep open sourcing big parts of their harness is a big deal
Day 4 of open sourcing parts of our harness. Today we made significant improvements to our workflow DSL. We are using it in our self-improving loop - turning agentic loops into more deterministic recipes. With these improvements (a lot of @typesafe's Jev in routing, classification, and workflow composition), we have been able to reduce the cost of agents significantly without sacrificing performance. I meant to open source the learning loop as well, but removing the business logic from @grepdotai still needs work. Enjoy the demo tho : )

New from @arcinstitute: using the latent space representation of genomes from single-cell life to find new candidate functional RNAs. I think this is cool because: (1) it uses deep learning and model interpretability to productive ends on a totally different kind of "knowledge"; (2) it shows how agents may be able to accelerate discovery in vast combinatoric spaces; and (3) it's an example of the synergy we'll hopefully see in the coming years between computational techniques and wet lab biology.
Delighted to share a landmark preprint from our lab, using genome language models and AI agents for biological discovery and genome mining! The stretches of DNA between protein-coding genes are often called the genome’s “dark matter,” but they are far from empty. They encode RNA molecules that sense metabolites, regulate genes, and control some of molecular biology's most important tools (such as programmable genome editors e.g. CRISPR/bridge) Much of this biology is unexplored. One reason is that RNAs can retain similar structures and functions even as their DNA sequences change dramatically, making their relationships difficult to recognize with conventional computational tools

Consumer agents combine a new product pattern with the capabilities of a general assistant. Productivity is not the point - this is a new way for people to use computers, and they're really really into it. I know the dominant feeling in silicon valley is being totally misunderstood ("too early") and then immediately derivative ("everyone's working on that"), but I promise it's day 1 of wave 1. Social, finance, self-improvement, degen and a thousand other agent categories are up for grabs .. so get creative and don't worry about being too late.

There's something amusing about VCs demanding detailed five-year financial projections from companies that have been operating for six months. Half the assumptions will be wrong by Christmas. But apparently the spreadsheet needs to go to 2031. With two decimal places.
