Any NATSEC/policy/cyber nerds- great 10-15 minute read on Canada’s civilian and military cyber capabilities fighting in the grey zone, and implications for policy, oversight, and law of armed conflict.
ICYMI: Inside the reporting/disclosure loopholes that seem to allow the CSE to conduct foreign cyber operations normally off-limits to them - and Ottawa to keep them off the public record.

On trade: interesting article on Canadian west coast sea port growth, and competitive advantages over Seattle Tacoma. Also, national ports strategy writ large. The pacific looks a bit different on a globe versus a flat map. seattletimes.com/business/in…
A succinct and articulate description of Canada-U.S. relations, and what it portends for Britain and Europe, but the always pointed but insightful @jengerson. The historically industrial Europe should recognize a canary in a coal mine. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

"Canada demands access to the U.S. market while closing its own."
Bullshit.
In 2024, immediately before Donald Trump began this trade war, 99.59% of US exports to Canada by value were tariff free.
The very few exceptions were negotiated by Donald Trump in 2018 in exchange for similarly limited tariffs the US wanted to impose, or concessions in items they deemed higher value like treatment of intellectual property.
Behind Canada's friendly, maple-leaf branding is a less polite reality: Canada demands access to the U.S. market while closing its own.
President Trump is ending that one-way arrangement with additional 50% tariffs.

Time for a thread about Open Source Intelligence, Aggregation, and Foreign Influence Operations.
Yesterday the President and DoD reposted an image depicting a raging fire in Chabahar, Iran posted by an OSINT account with 1.5M followers.

The photo in the tweet from @Osint613 is from a U.S. airstrike that took place in June of 2025. It is also altered with AI.
In addition, @Osint613 has taken down the tweet and issued a correction, stating it is old.

Thank frig. Let him fellate himself on Truth Social; fly him to Vegas and award him the Polymarket Peace Prize- whatever. A ceasefire and wind down is infinitely better to whatever atrocity wad coming next.

Lots of fun “NATO won’t help the U.S.” takes today from people who clearly have never read nor sought to understand the intent and limitations of the North Atlantic Treaty. It’s collective defence in a distinct geography, not an obligation to Leeroy Jenkins something foolish.
Anyone got any bets on whether we see Canadian bids for the DSRB subject to the same reasoning as when Kingston was considered for our capital? Too close to a potentially hostile U.S. to risk it? I could see Europe wanting to keep it in Europe…
Whichever country is selected to host the new Defence, Security and Resilience Bank will become the global capital for defence finance and innovation.
By making Toronto Canada’s choice, the federal government will give our country the best shot at hosting the bank, bringing thousands of jobs and economic opportunity that will make all of Canada better off.

A sober, deeply insightful, and highly informative (lengthy!) thread by @CDNPolicyHawk on the short and long term implications for Canadian oil of US intervention in Venezuela. Near-immediate risk to 11% of our U.S. exports, longer term to more. This MUST inform policy choices.
This is a bit of a “holy shit!” moment. While not a lot of information is available, an immediate concern is: Facing the possibility of unilateral lethal military strikes against organized crime targets, will friendly nations change our willingness to share criminal intelligence?
As @potus just announced moments ago, today the U.S. military conducted a lethal strike in the southern Carribean against a drug vessel which had departed from Venezuela and was being operated by a designated narco-terrorist organization.
My 10-tweet take on today’s CAF pay/allowances. For context, I’m out and was only ever a reservist (with domestic and overseas deployment), but I have a decent grasp on pay and comp. Overall, a good pay package that incentivizes the right things. Almost suspiciously competent.
Replying to @NoahGairn @priorconfirmed
1/FML? Oh geez. Ok, 20% for the newest recruits. 13% for more seniority having a pulse and a job. 20% for execs. The member with a desk job gets that decent bump. Annual lump sun for years of service is a nice retention bonus and is pensionable. CAF yoinked that from RCMP.
Holy shit! The U.S. Court of International Trade just struck down Trump’s ‘emergency’ tariffs, including those levied on Canada in response to the purported Fentanyl emergency.

A long-ish but worthwhile read on the mandate letter from PM Carney to his Cabinet, with some hopefully insightful prognostication on where this means he intends to take us as a country. I hope this analysis is on the mark, because if it is, this is what we need.
