It's National Fire Prevention Week! Charge your ebike, escooter, and hoverboard batteries safely.

ALT An ebike battery with pretend fire coming out of it. The battery is full of popcorn. The text reads: The CPSC National Fire Prevention Week Ebike battery fire popcorn bucket*. Prevent fires deliciously and charge your ebike battery safely. Never charge the battery while you're sleeping or not home. Use only batteries and chargers approved by the bike manufacturer. *Not a real product.
It's a brand new week, Fire Prevention Week to be exact! Who's ready to Plug in, Power up, and Stay safe? ⚡️ This year is all about focusing on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer.
Today, we remember the ultimate sacrifices made and lives lost 25 years ago. May our actions every day honor and represent those individuals and make them proud. #neverforget #patriotday
25 years later, their words remain.
On September 11, 2001, approximately 4 hours after the collapse of the World Trade Center, members of California’s Urban Search & Rescue teams answered the call and traveled across the country to New York City to assist with the search, rescue and recovery efforts following the attacks.
At the time, members of the team documented their experience; what they saw, the work they performed and the people they encountered during one of the most difficult assignments of their careers. The story was published in the Summer/Fall 2001 Edition of the then CDF Communique’ (pages 6-9).
A quarter century later, we’re sharing part of that story again to remember the lives lost, honor those who responded, and preserve the stories of those who were there.
25 years. We remember. We honor. We never forget.
Join us for our first-ever Open House on Saturday, October 10th, from 11 AM to 3 PM at Station 37, 511 Magnolia in Millbrae! Bring the family and enjoy a day of fun and activities while getting to know CCFD. We can't wait - see you there!

Smoke:
There is a significant fire producing smoke relatively close to the southern Santa Cruz Mountains today.
The source is the Timber Fire in the Big Sur/Monterey County area.
Why are you smelling it all the way in the Santa Cruz Mountains?
The important piece is today's atmospheric pattern.
Smoke doesn't necessarily travel in a straight line at ground level.
💨A combination of:
-Onshore/marine flow along the coast.
-Mountain-valley channeling Smoke being carried aloft and then mixing back down
-Relatively weak atmospheric mixing in some periods can bring smoke from the Monterey/Big Sur fires northward and into the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Wildfire smoke can travel hundreds of miles, and terrain and the height at which the smoke is carried strongly affect where it eventually reaches the ground.
There's another reason it can be particularly noticeable in the mountains: smoke can settle into valleys and hollows, especially when the atmosphere isn't mixing vigorously. So you can have a strong wood-smoke smell even when the visible haze isn't dramatic.
🚒 If you think there is a fire near you, look for corroborating signs.
🔥A visible smoke column, ash/embers, rapidly worsening visibility, or an official fire notification should be treated more seriously than an isolated smell of smoke.
When in doubt, call 911
When wildfire threatens, accurate information matters.
The CAL FIRE Incident page provides a statewide view of active emergencies, including incident locations, acreage, containment, evacuation information, maps and official updates from responding agencies. During the January 2025 Los Angeles fires, more than 25 million people visited fire.ca.gov for trusted, near real-time information from first responders.
