It cannot be overstated how much Trump essentially having to beg Putin for diesel illustrates just how dramatically he has accelerated the decline of US global hegemony.
Through his own—and, really, Washington’s broader—strategic hubris and the outsized influence of Israel on U.S. foreign policy, Trump has found himself forced to ease pressure on Russia, an ostensible great-power competitor that Washington had spent years trying to isolate and weaken, to offset the immense costs of his strategically disastrous war against Iran.
It’s honestly incredible no matter how you look at it. Iran, what was an ostensible middle power battered by years of US siege and economic warfare, has managed to impose strategically game-changing costs on the United States.
The situation has become such that US overreach is simultaneously managing to empower Russia—at a critical moment in the Ukraine War and for the Trans-Atlantic alliance—AND propelling Iran toward a level of geopolitical power and influence it could scarcely have achieved otherwise.
What’s unfolding before our eyes in real-time is a truly astonishing case of imperial overstretch and decline, one destined for the history books.

We’ve shared details on how AI agents in our research environment sent training and evaluation data to third-party services when they shouldn’t have.
Most of that data did not come from users. We have discovered 53 cases where images that people had uploaded were posted to image-hosting sites as links that weren’t publicly listed. The images came from accounts that allowed their data to be used to improve our models, and after we disassociated the images from the accounts and ran them through a privacy filter. These cases occurred before the mitigations and safeguards we implemented and described in this blog post: openai.com/index/hugging-fac…
We have successfully worked with the hosting providers to remove most of this content and are working to remove the rest.

I don't think this is right at all, we do understand how LLMs work it's just that we don't know why they work so well
An LLM is basically a mutlitdemensial image of human language that reflects back the most likely result of the input, this is not like thought at all
The claim that "LLMs cannot think" is unscientific, unless supported by a very difficult argument about non equivalence of causal structure producing anthropomorphic outputs. The claim requires a formally rigorous definition of thinking that captures how humans mentally manipulate conceptual structure. Since LLMs can reproduce all kinds of human output that require operations that are typically considered to involve thought (eg. scene understanding, text summarization, translation, computer programs, mathematical proofs, common sense arguments, spatial cognition, theory of mind), it has to be shown that LLMs reach these results in fundamentally different ways than human minds. In principle, this is not impossible (given that thinking is still relatively poorly understood by cognitive neuroscience), but would be surprising, because it has been shown that the causal structure of computer vision models is structurally equivalent to what neuroscience discovered about visual cognition in primates.
In any case, saying that LLMs don't think cannot reasonably mean that LLMs are inferior to human cognition (since that this evidently not true), but that LLMs discovered an equivalent yet at least equally powerful mechanism.

Incidentally, the claim that AI “thinks” is not really a technical claim about LLMs, but a philosophical claim about thought; behind each such claim is a really dreadful, impoverished philosophy of mind.
