"The Rushdie Affair has yet to be subject to a sustained analysis by historians. Journalists and political scientists continue to focus on the fatwa, despite the fact the protests against the novel in Britain predated Khomeini’s decree by two months." cambridge.org/core/journals/…

When we started work on this book, I knew it was about how charity shops were part of a broader retail history. I didn't realise it would also be about how British communities and the end of empire were part of both local and global histories. Find out more...

We're very much looking forward to this IHR @contbrithist seminar tomorrow on @gcgosling and @alix_green's edited collection, 'Retail & Community' (out 28 June!). With TWO chapters on Salvation Army charity retail: one by Ruth Macdonald, our Archivist, and one by @M_Gehrhardt
When we started work on this book, I knew it was about how charity shops were part of a broader retail history. I didn't realise it would also be about how British communities and the end of empire were part of both local and global histories. Find out more...

I've started writing my next book, 'Never Cross a Picket Line', for @VersoBooks. It's a history of picketing & picket lines in Britain, primarily in the last third of the 20th century. Anyone with any good picket related reading / watching etc. recommendations, get in touch!

On this day in 1941, clothes rationing was introduced by the British government in an attempt to reduce clothing consumption by approximately one third. The impact on individuals was immediate. British film producers were affected, too. Their story is less well known. 🧵

1/ Sadly, @DavidOlusoga is right about the St Cuthbert's Village council estate he grew up in (see next tweet) - it was not a success - but he's also so right about the libraries and sports centres that allowed working-class kids like him to flourish back then.

Volunteer Chris found these great photos from a series simply titled “Holiday Scenes” which we think were produced as part of a @The_TUC campaign for Holidays with Pay, which started in 1911, and showed the benefits of rest & recreation
