I was a network engineer at Verizon for 15 years. Trust me when I say, it won't take near that much for @Starlink to overtake someone like Verizon. I can tell you this with the utmost certainty because I tried to approach Verizon executives about satellite-based communications in 2007, having done it in the Marines from 1995-2001. I was laughed at.
Verizon's CEO said today that SpaceX will need at least 4-6 years and $300B-$500B to fully build out its @Starlink Mobile U.S. carrier network: "Their service just can't compete with a terrestrial network. In suburban and urban areas, where 98% of our revenues are, we're somewhere between 100x–1,000x more efficient than they are. We know exactly what they're going to do. We know who they're talking to on towers. There's no magic wand. There's no secret sauce. There's no shortcut. They're going to look at 65,000–80,000 macro sites. They're going to need backhaul, RAN, and a tremendous amount of spectrum. It's going to take a minimum of four to six years to fully build that out. It's going to cost hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars, I assume somewhere between $300 billion and $500 billion. Then they need to build retail, customer service, back office systems, et cetera. All of that gets them basically the same network and same capabilities and same cost structure as what we have today. Then sometime over the next four to six years, they have the possibility of becoming the sixth, not the fourth, the sixth competitor in the market. You can be sure over these next three to five years or six years, we are not going to be standing still. Four to five years from now, we will be two to three generations better than where we are today. We will have high-speed broadband gig-plus coverage across the country with our millimeter wave. We are ahead of most people and already experimenting with what 6G applications will look like." (via Verizon's Q3 earnings call earlier this morning)

This comes at such an ironic time for me. I know a few coffee shop owners, and my daughter is a barista at one of them. I am CONSTANTLY hearing about POS systems like Toast, Shift4, Square, etc who do POS, but also claim to have messaging, time clocks, etc, etc and they all say they suck at doing that work. I was just explaining to someone last week, I don't understand why a coffee shop doesn't just use something like @basecamp ... and here we are. 💪 youtu.be/29fZunbQLFc?si=tJHu…

It definitely feels counterintuitive that @GeminiApp, an assistant built by @Google, can't seamlessly reach across multiple Google accounts at once. So when I want it to summarize emails for my personal @gmail and 2 @GoogleWorkspace accounts and send it to me at 07:00 every day, I have to ask @bot to do it. 😑

While I didn't use an Apple Duo, I did try the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold until I ... folded. This review of the Duo on @WSJ hits all the major point and issues I found with my Pixel 11 Pro Fold before I decided to return it and opt for the Pixel 11 Pro. wsj.com/tech/personal-tech/i…

BraxOS ships without a Google account, Google Play Services, built-in trackers, ads or vendor analytics. There's nothing to opt out of, because none of it is installed. Reserve yours: wink.braxtech.net #BraxWink #deGoogle

Excited to see @farmwave featured by @FastCompany as one of the next big things in food and agriculture. 👏 Farmwave uses AI to help farmers track grain loss in real time - running on Dell Pro Rugged tablets, the technology delivers insights directly from the field. del.ly/6017BGFGZB

Question I seriously want to ask #farmers. I was once told by a farmer, that farmers don't need/want to learn how to farm. They want to learn how to run a better business. True? As artificial intelligence continues to take center stage, and many companies seem to be lobbying for the farmers data, most of which seems to involve bringing their data into AI pipelines, silos, models, platforms, etc ... what's to prevent the farmer from simply making sense of all their data with nothing more than a Google Workspace w/Gemini Enterprise account for $35 a month (as an example)? Not asking sarcastically, genuinely want to be educated on the answer. Tagging some people off the top of my head I think would have good answers. @nfaleide @NickHorob @LowBoomLowDrift @jakesmoker1 @PitstickFarms @AllamFarmer @HenkelAdam

Well, I have until 10/8 to return my Fold and I think I'm going to exercise that option. I like it when the screen is open, but not so much when it's closed. It's so much heavier in my pocket. It's very slippery without a case, but from what I have read, cases fall apart on these because of some required adhesive across the spine. 🤔 I like the idea of it, and as I said, it's nice when the screen is open, but only for some applications. For example, when you're watching YouTube and you go full screen, it's really only the size of one of the halves, which means it's be no different than taking a non-foldable phone and turning it sideways. It's kind of hard to hold in the open position when you're mobile, and I travel a lot, so mobility is important to me. Perhaps the Samsung version would have been better, as it's much lighter, thinner, and a bit smaller, but I just can't get past all the Samsung bloatware that I have no need for.
I think this time, I'm going to fold.

"All roads lead to Rome" as they say. Decisions = Progress. Make a decision. Learn from it, but be open to other ways of execution.
Ego is the primary obstacle to good decision-making. Leaders often attach their identity to a decision and resist adjustments.

Earlier this year I started a single member consulting business. I run things lean at @farmwave and this one was no different. @basecamp and @heyhey that's it. This morning was my first kickoff meeting with a new client in Atlanta. Got there early, reviewing some notes and suddenly everything stopped. Email and project work was down 20 minutes before meeting time. Because of the way this company is transparent about outages, and they communicate with their customers, I wasn't worried. They were all over it and all was back up in time for the meeting. And even if it wasn't, so what. Things happen. It's just nice to know that even when something breaks, you know where you stand with this company. They're on it. Thanks Jillian and Chris for the comms and hard work this morning. I appreciate your team. Still a loyal customer ... 19 years and counting.
The postmortem for today’s @basecamp and @heyhey outage is here, with details on the cause and the fix. We’re sorry for interrupting your work. 37status.com/incidents/l1yn9…

I got to "drive" a friends @Tesla Cybertruck this morning. The experience makes you look at a lot of things differently, even from a psychological perspective. It also makes you look at others and wonder why they're still doing what they're doing. Impressive.

We've been quiet at @farmwave . Why? We're working. Right now, we don't have time for shows, social media content, or expressing yet another opinion on agtech. We thought we'd make it public the progress we're making. So, here's a link to a public board so everyone can see. 🚀 = new feature 🔥 = issue/bug we're working on. public.app.basecamp.com/p/S4…

I really appreciate the military / veteran discount places give. Truly. But could we all get on the same page with a unified system please? ID Me, GovX, Sheer, Home Depot has their own, etc. This is so much harder than it needs to be. @elonmusk can we get a Veteran badge or something on here and simplify this?
