Great @AtlanticCouncil piece on PJM capacity crisis: “Reorienting competitive wholesale markets requires rebuilding the long-term contracting layer through hedging requirements driven by state regulators, RTO-brokered reliability charges, or both…” utilitydive.com/news/capacit…

New from me and @ColumbiaUEnergy on permitting reform timelines I wanted to understand how BAAJA could affect the time spent on permitting/construction for different energy projects compared to the status quo Can this bill help with timelines? Potentially a lot! A Deep dive👇

BAAJA would give a huge leg up to clean, firm geothermal power, which we badly need on the grid. Our geothermal team dove into all of the changes and lays them out here.
BAAJA blasts through the geothermal-fossil permitting parity gap: For two decades, oil and gas on federal land have had a faster permitting track than geothermal. A new Senate bill includes provisions that would close most of that gap. publicenterprise.org/baaja-b…

Last week bipartisan Senate negotiators unveiled the most ambitious and serious permitting reform proposal in recent memory. It was a real pleasure to join @drvolts for a (thorough!) unpacking of what's in bill and why people should care. open.spotify.com/episode/6t0…

Today our team at @Breakthrough GRIDS, along with @Googleorg and several other funding partners, is excited to announce the launch of the OpenGrid Foundation (@OpenGridOrg). To date most funding for grid modeling has focused on studies. Tools and data haven't had that support..
Modern power grids demand open, shared infrastructure. Today, the Linux Foundation launched OpenGrid to accelerate energy infrastructure deployment worldwide using open source data standards, schemas and APIs. Contributed by @Breakthrough and announced onstage at Open Source Summit Europe by Vice President of GRIDS, Alice Yake, OpenGrid aims to give every country access to high-quality grid planning tools by 2030 to deliver infrastructure faster. Check out our latest piece on financing strategic grid assets. We discuss: a Transmission Trust Fund, federal equity stakes in generation projects, and a hyperscaler-led Grid Infrastructure Compact.
America needs a bigger, stronger electric grid. But how do we pay for it when families are already struggling with electricity bills? @daniel_wolf1's latest blog explores ways to finance new power lines and power plants while protecting household budgets: cleanecon.org/paying-for-the…

Okay thank you, @JaneAFlegal. Let's talk BAAJA & geothermal. If you want clean, affordable, baseload power and you want it fast, enhanced geothermal is your technology. If you want to unlock the Geothermal Decade even faster, BAAJA is your bill. 🧵
To a degree people are not yet appreciating, the geothermal provisions in BAAJA may be among the highest impact for accelerating global decarbonization.

Excited to share this new report from CleanEcon and Grid Strategies. Utility bills continue to rise in restructured states. Our solution: Policymakers should require LSEs to engage in long-term, bilateral contracting, to hedge ratepayers against violatile price swings.
⚡Nobody likes surprises on their electricity bill. Our latest Frontier explores how long-term power contracts could protect consumers from price swings while helping finance the reliable power America needs. Read more: tinyurl.com/29hed5mh

I don't think we would have seen this much bipartisan disregard for utility interests, if not for the considerable public anger/backlash over power prices. A remarkable realignment of interests and power happening in DC that was unthinkable a year ago.
ICYMI: There wasn't much daylight between D and R negotiators on transmission parts of permitting bill. “We shared a lot of the same goals in bringing the utility sector into the 21st century in terms of its regulatory structure," a Senate GOP aide involved in talks told me

my fav part of the leaked enviro transcript is the guy suggesting Dems kill permitting reform and just do a standalone transmission bill instead 🤪
Scoop: Enviros held a call Thurs in which progressive opponents tried to rally fence-sitters against the permitting bill. I obtained the transcript. "We really have to have a pretty clear agreement by all parties that this is an effort to stop this bill, not to make it better"

Like Baja Blast.
Vital question for #energytwitter: how are people pronouncing BAAJA (Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act)? A hard "J"? Or soft like in Baja, or a third option like Steely Dan's "Aja" but with with a "Bay" on the front? #energy #climate #permitting

The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 unlocks the transmission and clean generation we need to meet rising energy demand while lowering costs. We urge Congress to swiftly pass this bill.

Yesterday DOE announced $99M+ for 21 next-gen geothermal projects across the country. Represents the largest award in agency history! 5 projects will conduct enhanced geothermal tests, while 16 projects will conduct exploration drilling. Congrats to all the selected projects!
