Mexican cartels are about to find out.
Roughly 500 US troops are moving into Texas’ Rio Grande Valley this week, with video showing soldiers arriving in Chinook helicopters, days after a Coast Guard boat came under fire from cartel members.
The Coast Guard says its crew was on a joint interdiction patrol when gunfire came from across the border. Personnel returned fire, no one was hurt, and no boats were damaged. Law enforcement sources describe the shooters as suspected cartel members, and the incident is still under investigation.
Northern Command is calling the surge Operation Unified Response, which will involve more patrols, sensors, and force protection for Border Patrol and Coast Guard crews working the river.
Shooting at a US boat on the Rio Grande is not a border incident. It is an attack on American personnel, and the response is already on the ground.
Disappointing that this piece fails to mention that the lower cost of steel in the cited markets is the direct result of unfair trade practices such as overcapacity, illegal subsidies, and non-existent labor protections in non-market economies, as acknowledged by all G-20 countries this week in Milwaukee. Other than that …
While the President parades the obvious beneficiaries of protection through the Oval Office, we shouldn’t forget that those gains are paid for by others, including other American businesses and workers. ericadyork.substack.com/p/pr…

The Great Lakes are an environmental and economic asset for the United States, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing billions of dollars to Ohio’s regional economy.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative would protect our lakes so they can support Ohio and America for generations to come, and I’m encouraged to see our bill pass the Senate.

Aryna: “It’s really tough to control your emotions when you lose in a final of a Grand Slam and when you were trying to go for 3-peat. If I were to hold it inside, right now or on the court I wouldn’t be able to say a word. I would go not really nice over there. I wanted to let go of all that aggression and disappointment outside.”

I am a firm believer that the U.S. needs to make things and grow things. Here. And that our safety and economic livelihood long term depends on that.
But there is a way to handle this threat. @berniemoreno and I have a bipartisan bill to ban Chinese cars from American markets and from coming over our border bridges and tunnels. The bill passed unanimously through the Commerce Committee in July. The full Senate must now take it up, and pass it.
While news comes at us 24/7, some issues are both strategic and irreversible, and therefore need our attention. Michigan's auto industry, our jobs, and our industrial capacity as a country is worth protecting.
