One thing to consider this year is prioritizing effectiveness over productivity. It feels good to burn through a huge list of tasks but it's easy to spend a lot of time working on things that don't get you closer to your goal. But how can time be spent more effectively?

Obviously having a plan helps a lot here, but a strategy can be useful for doing the actual work. One I'm experimenting with now is to set extremely short time limits to finish a specific task. The aim is to become extremely focused on the task with no wasted effort.

For example, 10 minutes to finish writing a draft of an article or 3 minutes to brainstorm a project plan. Having a clear task up front and a super short time to complete it helps to clear out all distractions and make progress. Also helps to defeat procrastination!

Welcome to 2025! Today's the day that I would normally begin acting on new year's resolutions to improve my life in some way. However, we all know that resolutions never really stick for long. Here's why I think we should skip the goals and focus on establishing new habits:

A great book that explains more about how small habits can lead to big life changes is "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. Start there If you want to strengthen your toolkit for dealing with both good and bad habits this year. I'll be reading it again and posting my thoughts soon!

This year, my new habits are: - Write for myself every day and share something from it here on X - Exercise in some way for at least 15 minutes every day - Start every day by checking my notes to remind myself of my priorities What will yours be?

As a programmer, curiosity is your greatest asset. Keep exploring new languages and techniques, and you'll never stop growing.

I learned C over 20 years ago but neglected it since then. My curiosity about low-level programming brought me back to it and taught me a great appreciation of the language, warts and all.

I've been using the Fediverse via Mastodon for the last week and it's already been more worthwhile than the last few years on Twitter.

Logged back in to my Mastodon account about 12 hours ago and I'm already seeing more community and interaction in the spaces I participate than I normally do on Twitter. Much different than a year ago when I created my account.

I think the key difference, now that more people are there, is that you see better quality posts because there's no algorithm filling your feed with junk. It might now be easier to gain more traction on posts you make on Mastodon if you don't already have many Twitter followers.
The amusing thing about the FTX scandal is that I've literally never heard of it or it's creator until today. People must be looking for new places to get fleeced.
