Society and organizations invest heavily in selecting the best leaders, and existing research shows a positivity bias by focusing on the bright side of leadership. Should we focus on finding the best leaders or avoiding the worst? Our new paper provides robust evidence for an “avoid-the-worst” principle in human leadership preferences. We found that the top 100 business schools emphasize good leadership far more than the prevention of bad leadership. But actual employee experiences from 9.9 million Glassdoor reviews show that people mentioned their leader 70% more often in the negative than positive section, and negative leader mentions predicted company ratings 1.5 times more strongly. A bad-leader mention was also associated with 30% higher odds of leaving a company within the first year among former employees, whereas a good-leader mention is associated with only 5% lower odds of leaving. We also have causal evidence across 40 countries (N = 51,433) revealing that people were more willing to sacrifice time and money to avoid a bad leader than obtain a good leader (across both morality and competence). Our research suggests that people care more about avoiding the worst leaders than getting the best. But our leading schools are focused on the opposite issue. The central question of institutional design may not be who should rule, but how to prevent bad leaders from doing too much damage. This research was led by @H_Sjastad and @jareefbnmartuza Read the full paper here: osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/8g…

I worked the Brazilian elections for France 24. For what it's worth (and armed with a degree in History and Politics!!), here's my take on what happened.

If Lula wins tonight, it will elevate Rafael Fonteles, the governor of Piauí, who took over the campaign’s communication strategy after the first-round defeat. Young, moderate and just re-elected with almost 71% of the vote, he would emerge as a potential leader of the post-Lula left.

Lula wins, and it wasn’t particularly close — 3.5% or more than 4 million votes. It’s an epic comeback and we will need time to fully understand it. But one thing is clear — the extension in voting hours was not the difference maker in this race.

Reports on Brazilian TV of terrible chaos. Polling stations that had already closed their doors, reopening. Poll clerks completely confused. What a nightmare. Hard to say what the consequences might be, tonight and in the weeks and months ahead.

Brazil: the Supreme Court ordered voting to continue for two extra hours because of a shortage of buses in some cities, seemingly politically induced. This after 350,000 votes (0.25% of the total) had been counted.

Trump has systematically demolished every pillar of his support. In 2024 he created what could’ve been an enduring coalition by: Winning over Hispanic voters Winning a portion of Black voters Huge margins with men, largely around prices and the promise not to start new wars and put America first. He immediately: Tried to gut the Voting Rights Act and boot Black Caucus members from Congress. Terrorized Latino communities who wrongly thought he’d focus on deporting criminals and securing the border. Waged a war on Iran at the behest of Israel and drove up the price of everything. Systematically attacked every pillar of his support.
Here is every state with early/mail vote reporting ranked by the change in the share of votes cast by Black voters, relative to the same point in 2022. Could someone remind me which state the Callais case came from? (yes, Black turnout in LA is massive, with SC just behind)

Some centrists fantasize that because all LLMs have the ideology of Ezra Klein, that we may be on the doorstep of a great political moderation. I wrote about a fascinating paper from @ahall_research and Sho Miyazaki that, to my mind, opens the door to a very different outcome.
