The total number of prisoners in the Soviet gulag system in the 25 years under Stalin (the era of highest imprisonment rates in Soviet history), is less than the number the USA incarcerates in 3 years.
But that is not 100% accurate, and the real comparison is likely even more in favour of the USSR. Because this comparison is between the number which *passed through* Soviet prisons in 25 years (with a giant portion staying a very short time such as 6 months or 1 year) and the number of incarcerated inmates at the same time in US prisons in 1 year.
Historian Anne Applebaum cites an estimate of approximately 18 million people passing through Soviet camps and colonies between 1929 and 1953.
The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics recorded 7.6 million local jail population in one year, 2023.
In the appendix, “How Many?”, of her book Gulag: A History, she explains that the estimate is derived from Soviet administrative statistics made available after the opening of the archives, particularly NKVD records of annual prisoner populations and prisoner turnover.
___________
More to come, concerning conditions, policies, residivism rates; and a lot more to be said about the Soviet criminal justice system and its revolutionary philosophy which inspired the progressive prison policies in neighbouring Scandenavian countries.
For now, just one more small figure from a declassified CIA internal Cold War document:
"...a Soviet official's 1957 estimate of 800,000–900,000 prisoners, with 1–2% classified as political prisoners. The report also gives a much higher estimate for the Stalin period."
So, the vast majority of Soviet gulag population were common criminals, murderers and rapists, etc., with very low percentage of political prisoners.

#Poland constantly tells the world that the USSR was “Hitler’s ally.” But here is Polish President Ignacy Mościcki hanging out with Hermann Göring, Hitler’s Reichsmarschall, commander-in-chief of the Luftwaffe and one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany, on a hunting trip in Białowieża in 1938. Göring’s "hunting visits" were accompanied by political talks with the Polish leadership. After the 1938 visit, Göring even presented Mościcki with a Mercedes-Benz.
Poland signed multiple agreements with Nazi Germany and then, in 1938 plus got Germany’s carte blanche to seize Zaolzie from Czechoslovakia. And today Poland lectures everyone else about “collaboration with Hitler.”

💥 Pokud chcete pochopit, proč GumIQ107 neustále útočí na Motoristy, musíte to vnímat jako zástupný boj podrazàka Koláře, ktetý sestřelil Klause. Je taky se třeba vrátit do roku 1997, kdy “lepší lidé” realizovali uloupení Becherovky a zlata.
💥 Chronologická časová osa událostí
1. Květen 1997 – Prodej 59 % Becherovky za 200 milionů Kč
· Vláda: Václav Klaus (ODS, KDU-ČSL, ODA)
· Co se stalo: Vláda schválila přímý prodej majoritního podílu Karlovarské Becherovky konsorciu vedenému investiční společností Patria Finance (Zdeněk Bakala) a německou bankou Sal.
· Vlády: Václav Klaus (do listopadu 1997) → Josef Tošovský (poloúřednická vláda)
· Co se stalo: Česká národní banka rozhodla o prodeji převážné části zlatých rezerv (cca 56 tun). Prodej začal v říjnu 1997 a naprostá většina zlata opustila trezory za vlády Josefa Tošovského. Ivan Pilip v Tošovského vládě nezasedal, podporoval ji pouze zvenčí jako nově zvolený předseda Unie svobody.
5. Rok 2008 – Zpětná koupě: Bakala a Schwarzenberg
Bakala a Becherovka:
· Současnost: Zdeněk Bakala dodnes vlastní výrobce Becherovky, firmu Jan Becher – Karlovarská Becherovka, a.s., prostřednictvím své investiční skupiny BXR Group.
· BXR Group: Jeho rodinná kancelář spravuje investice do energetiky, realit a dalších odvětví (dříve vlastnila i uhelné doly OKD prostřednictvím NWR).
A kde skončilo zlato?
1. Hlavní prostředník: Goldman Sachs
· Jméno: Americká investiční banka Goldman Sachs. Česká národní banka ji pověřila zprostředkováním prodeje. Goldman Sachs tedy nebyla konečným kupcem, ale organizátorem a prodejcem.
· Role: Nakupovala zlato od ČNB a obratem ho prodávala na londýnském trhu dalším investorům (institucím, fondům, bankám). Její vlastní brokeři a tradeři na transakci vydělali obří sumy na poplatcích a spreadu.
Bývalý viceguvernér ČNB Luděk Niedermayer později prohlásil, že technicky vzato ani ČNB sama nevěděla, kdo konkrétně zlato kupuje, protože obchod probíhal přes prostředníka a šlo o anonymní trh.
3. Centrální banky Západu a čínské nákupy
· Čína: Čínská lidová banka v druhé polovině 90. let tiše a masivně navyšovala své zlaté rezervy (oficiálně je přiznala až s velkým zpožděním).
· Prostředník: Goldman Sachs (a další bullion banky).

I wrote a new piece about the Lend-Lease program to fully cover the subject and answer challenges and questions.
In the eight decades since that final victory, a persistent Western narrative has emerged: one that credits American Lend-Lease material with tipping the balance in the Soviet Union's favour. This article challenges that claim directly.
Lend-Lease was a genuine contribution, and to dismiss it as irrelevant would be dishonest. But the assertion that the Soviet Union could not have prevailed without it, a claim still echoed in Western popular histories, does not survive rigorous scrutiny. What follows is a four-part examination of Soviet industrial capacity, the chronological mismatch between aid delivery and the war's decisive moments, the internal transformation of the Red Army, and the broader strategic balance that made Soviet victory structurally inevitable long before American goods crossed the North Atlantic in meaningful quantities.
PART 1 :
Any serious engagement with the Lend-Lease debate must begin with chronology, because the chronology is damning to the maximalist case. The United States formally extended the Lend-Lease Act to the Soviet Union in November 1941, but the logistical reality meant that supplies in militarily significant quantities did not begin arriving until the latter half of 1942, and the programme did not reach its peak deliveries until 1943 and 1944.
This timing is critical. The three battles that decided the war on the Eastern Front, Moscow (autumn-winter 1941), Stalingrad (autumn 1942 through February 1943), and the Kursk salient (summer 1943), were fought overwhelmingly with Soviet-produced weapons, Soviet-grown food, Soviet-mined fuel, and the blood of Soviet soldiers. To credit Lend-Lease with these victories is to confuse a supporting actor for the lead.
The crisis that Lend-Lease was meant to address had already passed by the time the pipeline reached its stride. The Red Army that smashed Army Group Centre in 1944 was built on four years of catastrophic sacrifice and accelerating domestic production, not on American trucks and tinned beef.
In the autumn of 1941, the Wehrmacht drove to within striking distance of Moscow. The Stavka's response, drawing on Siberian reserves, improvised fortifications, and the desperate resolve of a nation fighting on its own soil, produced the first major German strategic defeat of the Second World War. At this moment, total Lend-Lease deliveries to the Soviet Union amounted to less than 1% of what would eventually arrive. The Sherman tanks, the Studebaker trucks, the canned rations: none of this existed in meaningful quantities at the front when Georgy Zhukov launched his December counteroffensive.
The first Arctic convoys had barely begun running. The Persian corridor was not yet operational. The Alaskan-Siberian air route (ALSIB) would not become functional until late 1942. Moscow was saved by Soviet soldiers with Soviet guns manufactured in factories relocated, in an astonishing feat of wartime logistics, east of the Urals. That relocation alone, arguably the greatest industrial migration in human history, is a more significant factor in Soviet survival than anything that crossed the North Atlantic in 1941 or early 1942.
Stalingrad:
The encirclement and destruction of Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus's Sixth Army at Stalingrad is universally acknowledged as the strategic turning point of the European war. By February 1943, when the last German survivors surrendered in the ruins of the city, Lend-Lease deliveries were accelerating but still represented a modest fraction of Red Army frontline strength. The T-34s that formed the walls of Operation Uranus's encirclement came from Chelyabinsk and Nizhny Tagil, not from Detroit. The aircraft flying close support were overwhelmingly Soviet-designed and Soviet-built Ilyushin Il-2s.

The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is the topic that comes up every day in my replies so I thought I would write a long piece explaining the rationale behind it !
Part 1:
Western historians and their ideological allies have spent decades smearing this decision as cynical or opportunistic. This article rejects that framing entirely. The pact was not a compromise. It was a masterstroke of statecraft, executed with cold precision by a leader who understood better than anyone that the Soviet Union's survival was the precondition for the defeat of world fascism. History vindicated Stalin completely.
To understand the pact, one must first understand the criminal failure of the Western powers in the years that preceded it.
Throughout the 1930s, the Soviet Union was the only major power that consistently and sincerely opposed the rise of Nazi Germany. Under Foreign Minister Maxim Litvinov, the USSR championed collective security, called for a united anti-fascist front, and pleaded with Britain and France to build a defensive coalition capable of stopping Hitler before war became unavoidable. The Western powers refused at every turn. Their reasons were not principled. They were ideological.
For the ruling classes of Britain and France, Nazi Germany was not a threat to be stopped; it was a weapon to be directed eastward against the Soviet Union and the socialist project it represented.
This calculation was laid bare at Munich in September 1938. Britain and France, without consulting or even informing the Soviet Union, handed Hitler the Sudetenland on a silver platter. Czechoslovakia, a sovereign nation with a capable military and treaty obligations from both France and the USSR, was simply surrendered.
Stalin had personally signaled the Soviet Union's readiness to honor its commitments and defend Czechoslovakia. France refused to act, and the chance to stop Hitler without a general war was squandered. Stalin correctly concluded that the West had deliberately steered German aggression eastward and would do so again at the Soviet Union's direct expense.
The Anglo-French-Soviet negotiations that limped along through the summer of 1939 confirmed every suspicion. The Western delegations arrived without binding authority, stalled endlessly, and refused to address the core Soviet requirement: guaranteed military access through Poland and Romania to actually engage German forces. Britain and France were not negotiating in good faith. They were performing diplomacy while privately hoping that Hitler and Stalin would exhaust each other, leaving the capitalist West to dictate terms to a weakened Europe. Stalin saw through this performance with perfect clarity.
Faced with a West that had chosen appeasement over alliance, Stalin took the only path that protected the Soviet state. He turned the Western powers' own strategy against them. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact denied Hitler the quick eastern war he wanted and preserved the Soviet Union for the fight that was coming. It was a strategic masterstroke that bought the time the USSR needed to prepare the most powerful military force the world had ever seen.
The defining feature of Stalin's leadership in this period was his absolute clarity about the future. While Western leaders clung to delusions of lasting peace, Stalin never wavered in his understanding that war with Germany was inevitable. The only question was when it would come and whether the Soviet Union would be ready.
