May ads na sa Pinterest, kaya kailangan ninyo nang lumipat sa are.na 🍵 Meron mga libro, saliksik, sanaysay, tula, pelikula, graphic design, photography, design, fashion, etc. Plus, it's human user-centric, not algorithm-centric—which is so valuable these days

AI isn’t destroying society, we are. In Esquire, Carljoe Javier flips the AI debate: 🧠 “AI problems are human problems.” From labor to climate to sovereignty, ethics means accountability. #EthicalAI #AIGovernance #Philippines esquiremag.ph/long-reads/not…

nostalgia for the “computer room” is often sentimentalism, but I do think the core dynamic it embodies - making the digital a discrete realm; something voluntary; partitioned from the ones rest of life, rather than intruding into every waking moment - is laudable

The Philippines powers AI with data, and it’s built on digital sweatshops. Policy must catch up. Regulate this invisible workforce. #FairWork #DigitalLabor #AIethics #DataAndAIethicsPH #PHLaborReform Full interview: youtube.com/watch?v=_Ae1eqz8…
The Hidden Cost of AI: Our Conversation on Data Annotation and Digital Sweatshops In my conversation with journalist Regine Cabato, we revisited her August 2023 exposé on the Philippine data annotation industry, specifically the labor conditions tied to Scale AI and its platform Remote Tasks. For me, this story was a turning point. It was the first concrete indication that AI wouldn't just disrupt high-end knowledge jobs, it was already exploiting low-end digital labor. Regine detailed how many Filipino workers, some students, others relying on it full-time, were earning below minimum wage for hours of annotation work. While some firms have tried to implement ethical pay models, the presence of “digital sweatshops” pulls down the perceived value of this labor across the entire industry. Even ethical players can’t compete when exploitation sets the pricing benchmark. What struck me was the asymmetry: soaring global demand for data annotation services meets a race to the bottom in worker protections. And yet, this also signals opportunity. Just like content moderation eventually matured, handled by large BPOs at sustainable wages, so too could data annotation, if we act. If the Philippines professionalized this space, we could move beyond being invisible cogs in the AI pipeline to becoming global leaders in data curation and AI operations. But first, we have to reckon with how we’re treating the workers powering this revolution. Full conversation in the comments: 🧵
