I'm just trying to make sense of a country where it has taken 20x longer to complete the environmental approval of its first high-speed rail line than it did to knock down the White House's East Wing and build a brand-new ballroom wing.

i) boys interest in reading peaked at 52% in 2016
ii) now only 28% of boys are into it, drop of nearly half
iii) girls also peaked in 2016! 65%! girls do like books more
iv) girls now down to 42%, drop of a third
v) thus: ALL kids were abandoned by publishers, boys just more affected
vi) I say "different people like different things, that's okay, don't be mad about it" a lot...
vii) ...but when people post "boys don't read", their mental model is simply wrong: girls' interest in books is now lower than boys' interest in books was every year from 2005-2022
viii) this is not because "girls don't read" -- it's because the books made & marketed for girls are displaced by books for adult women that happen to feature teenage characters
ix) boys & girls have different interests, however their interests have more overlap than the interests of kids & adults
x) while it's true that if you want books aimed at boys you need to go back in time, this is also true for girls!
xi) The Last Unicorn is a femme-coded hero's journey that both genders can read and enjoy. "Trust Fall" is not.
xii) Howl's Moving Castle is a femme-coded fantasy hero's journey that both genders can read and enjoy. "A Court of Thorns and Roses" is not.
xiii) for a YA book to be publishable now, it needs to be able to sit alongside romance books targeted at adult women on bookshelves and have crossover appeal to an audience that would read those sort of things
xiv) Brandon Sanderson has some books that can do this. The sample size is not zero. What IS zero is the subset of newly published books that have zero appeal to adult women looking to read teen romance.
xiii) Darren Shan sold 30+ million copies of male-coded horror-fantasy mid-grade YA.
xiv) Darren Shan's new series? Rejected. "I assumed the series would be picked up by one of the traditional publishers...the publishers that I took it to all passed."
xv) This makes complete and total sense. His brand name carries zero crossover appeal for the audience who now browse YA shelves.
xvi) The facts of the universe, tragic as they may be, are:
- the population pyramid of reading kids is declining
- boys and girls have different interests
- girls have more interest in reading than boys
- the overlap between boys' & girls' interests is higher than the overlap between girls' and adult women's interests
- both boys & girls have seen large drops in reading interest since 2016, boys more so
- more than half of boys COULD be interested in reading
- the pool of romance readers is large
- adult women do not want to be seen in public reading traditional romance section books, or to think of themselves as the kind of person who does that
- if you want to make money, you need to sell books to this category
- the best way to do that is "crossover" works that sit in more respectable shelf sections
- putting "crossover" works on a shelf changes how that bookshelf is perceived
- putting "crossover" works on every shelf in a store maximizes the chance of selling product to the cash cow customer segment
- putting "crossover" works on every shelf also maximally dilutes the (real or perceived) social penalty of reading romance
- maximally diluting the social penalty of reading romance ALSO maximally associates all books with romance
- associating all of reading with romance is a theoretically economically smart move to address the very first bullet in this section on the changing demographic pyramid
- the publishing industry is heavily centralized
- sales channels are turbo centralized
- group think and social conformism around our current culture war therefore go unchecked and exacerbate ALL the above dynamics
Somewhere at the end of that long chain of facts we get people posting insane things online in one direction or another, foaming at the mouth to call boys who like male-coded books "future incels" or women who like romance books "porn brained" -- and no matter how much people scream at the other gender online, nobody is going to publish a new book my young son will actually go find and read anytime this decade.
Replying to @ConradBastable
oh hey look, we cratered boys' enjoyment of reading by nearly half in 20 years.
it turns out marketing and branding work.
for every "we don't read romance-coded books" girl, there's a "i don't read girl-coded books" boy.

Something that's odd to me is how social media platforms (correctly) block eating disorder content because they realize it's contagious, but they don't do the same for other mental health issues that are equally (arguably more so??) contagious

The breakneck race to destroy *any* connection to a shared or objective reality is one of the most repulsive things going on right now in tech
You WILL be alienated from every other human on earth. You WILL be embalmed in your own delusions, and you’ll pay us $20/month for it
Microsoft has filed a patent for an AI system that could rewrite what people say during livestreams in real time. It could change words depending on who's watching, taking into account their age, location, and language.
The idea is to clean up broadcasts by removing filler words, censoring swearing, or even replacing certain words.
The AI could also adjust the speaker's lip movements so viewers wouldn't notice anything had been changed.

Basically, liberalism is under a pincer attack. The right is increasingly deranged, while the leftists spend all day trying to stab liberals in the back.
But for the first time in a long time, it feels like liberalism is beating back the pincer attack.

I remember a discussion I had with a friend a long time ago. They disagreed with me when I called feminism a women’s advocacy movement. They insisted it was a women’s rights movement. I said that’s silly. I said when women win equality in places the feminist activism doesn’t stop. They continue to advocate and push for more women. And since men’s advocacy is basically illegal, the spaces end up becoming fully female.

Something striking covering Platner/Jackson was how over-represented wine moms were at their events. Several told me they were “radicalized” after watching their adult children struggle despite having gone to good schools, etc. They were some of the angriest people I spoke to.

I do think this week provided support for the hypothesis that Trump benefited from Democrats nominating three pretty weak presidential candidates in a row. There's a lot of talent in the party that hasn't translated to the top of the ticket lately.

Was literally explaining the, "society falls when old men don't plant trees they will never sit under" to my neighbor (boomer)
He said he didn't get it and why would he plant trees if won't be around to see them
They just released a dress-making game on Steam that has hit females like crack cocaine hit the inner cities in the 90s. Turns out you need to give them the content they actually want instead of butchering content they don't want to try and appeal to literally everyone.
Middle managers who control every creative budget that gets too big to fail will never understand this.

1.) The 'representation matters' people have nothing to say about 3-1 protagonist ratios if it concerns a demographic they hold in contempt.
2.) Boys don't decline to read because of this—books are in competition with all other media, and boys mostly experience male heroism in games (which is why the feminization of the gaming industry and characters is so explosive online)
3.) If you don't care about the principle of representation based on demographics (I don't), it is hypocritical to get too incensed about this in publishing. The market reflects what sells most reliably, but there is somewhat circular logic to the idea that creative choices increase demand.
4.) The Atlantic isn't the bad guy for reporting a phenomenon that can be observed in plain sight. But the hatred they're getting for it is revealing of how vicious the insular publishing-bookworm community is towards the interests of adolescent boys.
5.) If you refuse to accept that boys and girls are intrinsically different, and think the differences can be "fixed", everything in this report and the world generally will confuse you.

Woke fatigue was very real; whatever our goals, between ~2013 and ~2023, we got pretty obnoxious in how we pursued them and people genuinely got sick of it.
But chud fatigue…they alienated the public more in two years than we managed in a decade. Incredible stuff.

I used to think they were joking, but they genuinely, unironically think you can run a far left candidate in every single part of the country, and they expect every candidate to be far left whether it’s in New York City or Mississippi. They can’t conceptualize someone not as far left as them.
