After travelling all day yesterday home in time for the weekend. It’s going to take a while to come down from all that astounding archaeology, none of which would have come to light without all that outstanding work by the team. This was peak @DigWaterloo. Thanks everyone!

The cannonball has officially been lifted! No musket ball was found near the skull of the horse, indicating that it was not euthanised in the trench like the others - it was likely killed by the cannonball nearby and then dragged into the trench to be buried.

One of our most exciting discoveries this year was a 6lb cannonball embedded in the rib cage of a horse discovered in the north end of the trench, amongst other euthanised horses and butchered cow remains. Our archaeologists noted that they had never seen anything like it!

The carnage of the battle of Waterloo is still being uncovered more than two centuries later.
I talked to @DigWaterloo volunteer veterans @ProfTonyPollard about their painstaking work at Mont-Saint-Jean farm, which served as Wellington's field hospital.
