Producer Gary Usher, himself no stranger to working with Wilson, takes the Ivy League’s original, itself indebted to the sound of Hawthorne’s finest, and filters it through Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations, all chiming pianos and intricate orchestration. He even brings in the Wrecking Crew, gets Glen Campbell on vocals, and drafts in Bruce Johnston to give it that extra sprinkling of sand. The vocal harmonies are pure Beach Boys, those voices echoing one another in that exquisite way they made their own. The kaleidoscopic middle section is especially a treat, like the moment the acid kicks in halfway through a perfect pop song.
