I’ve invited our fantastic Chancellor to my incredibly important constituency.
The South East is not universally wealthy - we need investment in Dover.

We are creating a more controlled and orderly immigration system.

Those who come here and work in our care sector do our country a great service. 🇬🇧
The next step is introducing an umbrella sponsorship scheme to combat the exploitation and poor working conditions so many experience.

I work in healthcare and this is so true. So many stuck in the system, and treated like shit by the employer.
Ex-migration minister Mike Tapp calls for an "umbrella" visa sponsor system to prevent the exploitation of foreign care workers who are "trapped" into staying with one employer.

This is a welcome and positive development, and we commend Mike Tapp MP for recognising the concerns of care workers already contributing to the UK’s health and social care sector.
Allowing eligible care workers to qualify for settlement after five years, rather than being subjected to an additional five-year wait, is a step in the right direction.
However, there is another important issue that must be addressed: the exploitation of sponsored workers by rogue employers.
We believe there should be a centralised body responsible for coordinating and issuing Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS), rather than leaving workers entirely dependent on individual employers.
Care workers should also have the freedom to move between approved employers of their choice without unnecessary immigration restrictions or the fear of losing their status. A system that allows workers to change employers more freely would reduce exploitation, discourage abusive sponsorship practices and promote fair competition among employers.
No worker should be forced to endure exploitation simply because their immigration status is tied to one employer.
Five-year settlement is a positive step. Protecting workers from exploitation must be the next priority.

I’m very pleased to see that care workers, who genuinely work in health and social care - caring for our elderly and vulnerable, will not have to wait an extra 5 years to apply for settlement if they are already here.
We must also address the sponsorship model that is creating conditions for exploitation. An umbrella system instead of individual sponsors would help stop the exploitation we currently see, because workers would be able to move employers - creating a competitive market not a race to the bottom.
The Home Office is responsible for how visas are issued, but need to work with the Health dept on this important issue.

This morning I spoke on Radio 4 about potential ILR developments later today.
I hope we land in the right place for those genuinely working in the care sector.
And we must look at a better sponsorship system to ensure exploitation ends- that is how we keep people working in the sector, not by trapping them.

Exempting foreign workers who have genuinely worked in our care system from the retrospective extension is absolutely the right thing to do, as I have been saying since I was the Minister overseeing this policy.
I am in politics to do the right thing, otherwise what’s the point.
As a part of my recent documentary I spoke to care workers about the work they do.
