"Professors teaching beginners" is a great fundamental observation that transcends martial arts. I find some of my best research happens on accident when teaching the introductory coursework. I'd rather be on the mat though. Stay warm!

"To read [P. Wyndham] Lewis is to become aware of the forces arrayed against reason and art and have anatomized every segment of the contemporary scene of glamorized commerce and advertising and bogus scientific philosophy and art and literature responsible for universal stupification." - MM 44'

"What I have encountered over the years is the very small degree of human appetite for the knowledge of forms and causes. People prefer their opinions and classifications rather than the exploratory work. It may be merely a matter of limited energy" - MM 70'

Last night, at the opening of the McLuhan Reading Room at Baukunst Studio in San Francisco, someone asked me why works of Edgar Allan Poe were on the shelf. Answers are often in unexpected places. Always be looking.
“Personally, I become aware of the medium and the ‘message’ when studying the work of Poe and Baudelaire. Poe had drawn attention to the advantages of poetry via its effects: if one starts with effects, it is possible to find the causes at leisure.” Marshall McLuhan 1973

“Smartphones” and “social media" were intentional fractures—manufactured cultural discontinuities—from the storied history of microcomputers and computer networking. The baggage of acquired wisdom had to be jettisoned so that consumers would over-share with reckless abandon.
this is now an infinite jest review account. first point of order: the reason all movies are bad now is related to why all movies are about nostalgia and take place before the year 2007, either literally or spiritually. 2007 being the release of the first iphone. the "smartphone" has totally shattered our collective relationship to media and it has not yet been put back together. no one has found a way to make a movie in our new world, our new way of existance, and it may indeed be the case that movies are finished - that cinema and all its subgenres, were a specific point in time and socio-technological development, and that it is simply over. it may be the case that one day someone finds a way to make a (good) movie that takes place post-2007, and incorporates this new world and existence we live in, but we wont know it before it happens. all mainstream "entertainment" tv and movies, are nostalgic, not out of a sense of cultural nostalgia, but out of necessity, because no one knows how to make a movie that incorportates phone-mediated-reality - in large part because no one yet fully knows how to live in this new reality. Infinite jest is a book about living in that reality.

“Determinism is the result of the behaviour of those who are determined to ignore what is happening around them. Recognition of the psychic and social effects of technological change makes it possible to neutralize the effects of innovation.” Marshall McLuhan March 1, 1966

He doesn’t admit to being an artist! Why is that? It is because “being an artist” is something people think they understand. It is, therefore, old hat and worthless. Anything new, anything actually worth doing, can’t be recognized.

Like Poe’s sailor, McLuhan was a deep student of the maelstrom. The early-McLuhan’s correspondence and unpublished manuscripts testify to the fact that he was engaged in a very deliberate, systematic and sustained appraisal of the survival strategies of other artists, how they understood their role, how they positioned and related themselves to society and what they had to do in order to perform that role.
