Once my patients hit 80 I tell them they’re “playing with house money” and we can do or not do pretty much whatever they want health-wise.

“The strict zero falls policy and the fall prevention procedures add intense stress to health care professionals. Studies have shown that nurses experience fear of patients falling, which is associated with guilt and shame. Nurses feel blamed for the patient’s fall even if an injury was prevented. Subsequently, health care professionals often restrict patients’ mobility to prevent falls even though this decreases patients’ physical function and leads to poor health outcomes.6 Hospital staff often fear litigation after a patient fall, which affects their work-related well-being and promotes the desire to leave the profession.”

i think my least favorite variety of bad faith lit crit emerging right now is “can you believe this horrendously problematic line?!” and then you read the book and discover the problematic line in question is spoken by a character called Villain McVillain, CEO of Evil

Ban it. Actually no, make it illegal. If a med student calculates a p value, straight to jail

Dr. Glaucomaflecken continues his fight against med student research (see link). I don't think we necessarily have to ban research, although that would be an improvement. We just need program directors to recognize that ranking by research pubs is bad for our profession. It causes early burnout among trainees and cheapens the value of research. Spread the word about the downsides of research rankings. There are lots of excellent program directors who will respond to this message the more it gets out. facebook.com/share/r/1EcmykH…

I think @sapinker is asking the right question about science and medicine at universities. I reach a different answer, and support that with 20 points.

@DGlaucomflecken made a post about how worthless med student research is and how it’s just making an arms race to create vast quantities of garbage to get into specific specialties. Let’s be honest : for a good decade #radonc was possibly the worst offender. (1/n)

Let me guess: they have strict parents who have high expectations. They grew up hating themselves for not being white. They went to Ivy schools. They rebel by getting tattoos and piercings and dyeing their hair blond. At least one of them is queer. How original!
We got anime from Japan, K-drama and K-pop from Korea, and video games from China about myths, folklore, class struggle, culture and history.
Yet Asian American media keeps recycling the same old boring tropes because of trauma or whatever.
It’s pure ethnic narcissism.

“A crooked tree lives its own life, but a straight tree is turned into wood.”
- Chinese Proverb
The idea behind this proverb comes most clearly from the writings of Zhuangzi, one of the central thinkers of Daoism in the 4th century BCE.
In the Zhuangzi, a famous story tells of a large, twisted tree that carpenters ignore because its wood is unsuitable for construction. Precisely because it is considered “useless,” the tree is never cut down and survives to live out its natural life.
Zhuangzi uses the tree as a metaphor for human life. In Daoist thought, being “useful” by conventional standards can make a person vulnerable to exploitation, control, and exhaustion. Those who are unconventional, overlooked, or unwilling to fit society’s expectations may instead preserve their freedom and live on their own terms.

We have great people talking... but, they'll make a deal—as an example, we'll talk about nuclear, and we'll be in there talking about nuclear for seven hours... and they'll go out, and they'll say, 'We never discussed nuclear.'"
