Originality is way overrated.

George Stigler was a superb Chicago Economist, and formulated the theories of regulatory capture, search theory, survivorship theory, oligopoly theory and industrial organisation. Yet, he also held Carl Menger’s work in high regard; with his main complaint being that he did not distinguish between goods and services. Here he gives a good summary of Menger.

Why do more men than women end up in some jobs, and more women than men in others? A new paper shows that a big part of it is that men and women are interested in different stuff. stevestewartwilliams.com/p/m…

I don’t know how to explain this but this man is one of the most loved footballer ever if not the most loved, I remember working at Marriott red 2024 champions league all the UEFA ambassadors were lodge there, and I saw so many legends that day but the most surprising thing is how all of them reacted when they saw Kaka, it was like a new born baby was in the room, fellow top players leaving their sits going to meet him, hugged him, you could just feel the happiness. Makelele, Carlos, Mikel, Rivaldo and so on, I can’t even mention them all, but Kaka was the highlight. A great man he must be.
Kaká, certe emozioni non passano mai. 🥹❤️🖤 #MilanInter #SerieAEnilive

Me agarró Gaby y me dijo, ‘no, no, vos venís’.

A University of Chicago psychologist published a short paper in 1984 proving that the average tutored student outperformed 98% of students in a normal class, and almost nobody outside education research has read it. His name was Benjamin Bloom. He called it the 2 Sigma Problem. Two of his PhD students, Joanne Anania and Joseph Arthur Burke, compared three ways of teaching the same material: > A normal class with one teacher and a room full of students. > Mastery learning, where students take regular quick tests and get corrections before moving on. > One-to-one tutoring, combined with mastery learning. The tutored students beat the normal class by two standard deviations. In Bloom's words, "the average tutored student was above 98% of the students in the control class." And about 90% of tutored students reached a level that only the top 20% of the normal class reached. Here's the part that matters. These were ordinary students in ordinary schools. Same kind of kids, different conditions. Bloom's conclusion was blunt. One-to-one tutoring works, but it is too costly for most societies to provide at scale. So he set a challenge for researchers: find methods of group teaching that work as well as a personal tutor. He also ranked the cheaper levers. Feedback and correction before moving on was worth about one standard deviation by itself. Graded homework, about 0.8. Cooperative learning, about 0.8. For 40 years, that challenge mostly sat there. Now AI tutors are being pitched as the answer. But the early evidence says the design decides everything. A tutor that hands you answers is a shortcut. A tutor that makes you try, checks you, and corrects you is closer to what Bloom measured. The 2 sigma never came from the tutor knowing more. It came from someone making sure you could not skip the hard part. Who was the one person who taught you one-to-one and changed how you learn?

🚨 JUST IN: Sec. Marco Rubio MIC DROPS Iran to the media 🫳🏻🎤 "Think about what we're saying here! The Iranian regime is basically arguing is, 'unless we get what we want, not only will we BLOW UP SHIPS, but we will DESTROY the energy infrastructure of our neighbors in the entire region!' Just think about that, because I think we skip over that, like that's some sort of NORMAL behavior. That's not NOT behavior!" "JUST IMAGINE if Iran had a nuclear weapon!" "Then they wouldn't be threatening to blow up pipelines. Then they'd be threatening to kill tens, if not HUNDREDS of thousands of people. That's who we're dealing with. So I think the fact that you even have to ask that question is a reminder of the nature of the regime that we're dealing with." Rubio is right. A regime that holds the world's oil supply hostage can NEVER be allowed near a nuke, and Donald Trump did the right thing Every Democrat who wanted another Hussein-style deal with these maniacs is on the wrong side of history. Iran only understands strength.
