A short introduction in case you don't know me - I am a tech consultant, working primarily for small and medium business. I help you to implement tech strategy, safe AI rollouts, SaaS consolidation, custom software architecting and builds and aligning your IT with business objectives. You may not be able to afford a full time CTO, so I step in to the roll on a part time basis.
I also host the Tech for Humans podcast.
Interested? Follow me and send a DM.
Genuinely how to people who run small and medium businesses keep up with their tech? Or do they just hope that it will keep working?
In another clip from the recent Tech for Humans podcast with Robby Russell, we talk about the concept of Makers or Menders and its influence on Robby, why he prefers working on maintaining projects as opposed to starting new ones, and the hit and miss of a new application.

I need experienced Ruby devs to help me build some small pieces to Rubian. Will and I decided what will be closed source and open source. About 98% of Kestówv and rubian will be open source. I will have the official Repo up shortly.
This week I spoke with @robbyrussell on the Tech for Humans podcast. You might know Robby as the creator of @ohmyzsh , or through @planetargon and his podcasts (or through his sticker empire). In fact, Robby is one of the best known voices in the Ruby community.
Hot off his keynote from Rails World a few weeks ago, Robby talks about his process to write that keynote. We also talked about running an agency, supporting open source, helping junior developers learn, and what music has to do with all of this.
Plenty here for developers and the people leading them!

Some thoughts on a few of the things that Vibe Coders might miss.

What other things do vibe coders not even realise that they don't know (and probably should)?
I had a great conversation with Anthony Sapountzis, CTO and Co-Founder of @aeriontech (Aerion Technologies) for his DevReady podcast.
We discussed fractional CTO services, software maintenance, AI adoption, SaaS sprawl, technology pilots and the growing demand for specialised software built around real business needs.

Vibe Coding - how to avoid common mistakes (or you don't know what you don't know)
Warning: In order to get something from this video you might have to set aside the idea that using an LLM is all you need to run a dev business or launch a product online. There might be more to know and learn that you could benefit from.

There are still a lot of 'vibe' coders around who have no idea about what they don't know.
If you are in the market to hire a developer or build a new website/app make sure you contract someone who knows about things like updates, security, deployment, scaling, infrastructure, databases, UI/UX, MVP and planning.
I'm not trying to build a moat - all of these things can be learnt, but often people with little or no software engineering experience don't even know that they have to know these things.

I'm using the Adobe skill to edit an image using Codex and the machine produces this text in its thinking : "The Adobe connector can adjust photos, but it can’t edit individual layers in the open PSD,"
Why? Whats the point of having a PS connector if it can not edit individual layers?
Are you part of a failed software project? my advice - stop trying to fix it as you go. Return to the start and work out what problem actually needed to be solved and work forward from there.

How do you avoid your next software/AI project failing?

There are a hundred photoshop clones on X right now, but this is the only Premiere video editing app you will find (it was not easy): velamedia.tech
Many software projects fail because stakeholders begin implementation before agreeing on the problem, outcome, ownership and constraints. Here's how this happens, and what to do about it:

The concept of the singularity will likely creep up on us bit by bit until it is obvious to everyone. If that’s true then have we passed that point for software developers?
Aleksandr Tynianov, CTO of dev agency KrastySoft said to me last week in our podcast about vibe coders; "They write code, but they don't build software, and it's different writing code and building software"
