Code is Law! The DAO fork didn't create Ethereum Classic. It abandoned it. The DAO launched April 30, 2016. A crowdfunded venture fund built as a smart contract, no board, no management, token holders voting on where the capital went. It raised roughly 12.7 million ETH, about 14% of all Ether then in circulation. June 17, 2016: an attacker exploited a recursive call bug in the DAO's split function and drained roughly 3.6 million ETH into a child contract. The code that governed the fund had no error here by its own logic. It executed exactly as written. The DAO's own 27-day holding period on new splits meant the attacker couldn't move the funds out immediately, which is the only reason there was time to argue about what to do next. Official story: the hack threatened Ethereum's credibility at 11 months old, so the network needed to restore the funds to keep builders and capital from fleeing. Mechanism: a hard fork rewrote history. Block 1,920,000, July 20, 2016. The chain was edited to move the stolen ETH to a recovery contract so original holders could claim it back. A soft-fork alternative was drafted first and dropped once developers found it opened a denial-of-service hole. The hard fork vote ran on Carbonvote, a nonbinding signal... turnout was a small share of the ethereum:native supply, and support among that share was lopsided in favor. That was the mandate. Some nodes rejected the rewrite and kept validating the original, unforked history. Both chains kept The DAO's code as it was written into the ledger at the fork block; only one of them kept the ledger's history as it was written by consensus, without the edit. That chain kept the name Ethereum. The one that didn't touch its own history became Ethereum Classic. Within weeks, Poloniex and Kraken listed ethereum-classic:native . The market didn't treat it as a rounding error. It treated it as a second asset with a real claim to the original chain. Nobody had to concede the attack was a theft to reject the fix. The DAO's rules said a split proposal, once submitted, executes as coded. " Code is Law" was ETC's answer to a network that rewrote its own ledger the first time the number got large enough to hurt. Ethereum Classic isn't the chain that lost the argument. It's the chain that didn't rewrite its history to win it.
