Many people incorrectly understand dogs. You can tell who's who by replacing the dog with "my horse" or "my kid" in the story
"My kid bit a kid": oh man what happened. Conflict resolution time
"My horse bit a kid at the cafe": man wtf you doing bringing a horse to Starbucks

Every ethical system not explicitly about duty will sooner or later become about shrimp welfare.
why aren’t the eas working on genetically modifying the shrimp to like it instead of slow marching the world towards tofu and crickets

One of the things that has become clear about the proposed DC foie gras ban is that it's about promoting veganism by exploiting populist impulses.
If you don't wish to become vegan, you should oppose it.

Foie Gras is delicious. And some people enjoy it. That's all the cost-benefit analysis you need.
It is ridiculous (and a moral error) to prioritise the welfare of any number of ducks or geese over the humans who wish to eat their fattened liver.
There are very specific contexts where utilitarianism may make sense. But extending it everywhere, while putting a non-zero weight on the welfare of each animal, is the equivalent of trying to understand the behaviour of electrons using general relativity alone.
first gate: if you’re an animal rights activist and not pro life, you can fuck right off
second gate: if you think human children should be malnourished for the sake of reducing animal cruelty you can also fuck off
third gate: if you think i’d be squeamish about slaughtering
a chicken or running an industrial factory you’re very wrong. I will cage the pigs, i will force feed the duck, i will wring the chicken’s neck.
none of this happens in isolation
IVF adults have all kinds of digestive disorders and other comorbidities btw

This is Lucy. Born in December. Not because of luck. Because of a choice.
She doesn't have to become a patient before she becomes a person. She just gets to be a kid.
For 300,000 years, every parent handed their child a genetic hand they’d never seen. That era is over. We are the first life form to read its own source code and select the next generation. Soon this will be the default way we have babies.
I want to end the genetic lottery and let every family make their own luck.
All of human history, we rolled the dice.
We don’t have to anymore.
sous vide is one of the best appliances for the modern home. no defrosting or attention to the food needed. bag and go. I’m caramelizing cream. I’m cooking frozen chicken to perfection.
Ducks are force fed 3x per day for 10 days to produce foie gras
each feeding takes TWO SECONDS
We are banning foie gras over 30 seconds of duck discomfort. my god
my parents made us say “happy reformation day” instead of trick or treat
How should Christians approach Halloween?
Christians tend to fall into four different camps when it comes to participating in Halloween:
- Total abstinence
- Full participation
- Partial participation
- Redemptive participation
Some abstain from Halloween altogether. Others fully participate in the festivities, while some enjoy the family fun without participating in the glorification of evil.
I believe the better alternative is redemptive participation.
My mom has set this example for me for years. She uses Halloween as an opportunity to share the gospel by attaching Bible verses to candy, making Scripture signs for her front lawn, and sharing the love of Jesus with the families who come to her door.
As she says, “What other time of year do you have people coming to your home and asking you for something? This is like the easiest evangelism opportunity possible.”
A night associated with darkness can actually be an opportunity to shine the light of Christ.
by the time i am 80, my children will consider my engagement ring little more than costume jewelry, and I am grateful for that kind of progress and abundance
Last month, we demonstrated high-rate alchemy: turning mercury into real, stable gold, beating CERN’s record by a factor of 10.
Last week, we enriched isotopes in the world’s most powerful plasma centrifuge, beating the Soviet record that stood for 40 years.
Now, we’re building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.
