linguistic drift is totally out of your ingroup's control, so it's curmudgeonly to complain when your jargon loses its meaning

pound for pound, a compost pile generates more energy than the sun's core. there's just a lot more sun's core than there is compost
I feel like i'm constantly hearing scientists describe things as "hotter than the surface of the sun." Maybe the sun just isn't that hot

ai being smarter than any human is not enough to spell our doom, for the simple reason that we are well adapted to living in such a world. that's like, our whole thing, we're primed by our biology to trust received wisdom to be more clever than we ever could be

humans rely heavily on the way that our activity over time & space constitutes an intelligence much greater in size and ability than any particular human could hope to match. unipolar takeoff scenarios for ai are thus implausible, there is already an approx human aligned hegemon

short attention span is *adaptive* in an environment with high information density. you are *foraging* for the good bits and abundance allows you to be fickle!

yes if you successfully cut yourself off from the phones you will find your attention span increase but that is just adaptation to information scarcity, you aren't healing anymore than you were injured

i do wonder how instructive chess community is wrt "suddenly a computer is better than you in every way" like chess is more popular in 21st century than ever before, in large part due to engines allowing ppl to get their feet wet without paying $$$ for tutors and books and such.

a diet of mostly staple crops seems obviously less nutritious than that of a hunter-gatherer, so one might imagine that the agricultural revolution was at the time hugely controversial because of all the grainslop. but, we did eventually learn the bitter agricultural lesson.

hypertext is such a banger technology, my favorite artistic medium. it's language that you can interact with, tweak and transform in real time like speech but possesses a permanence no spoken word can imitate
curious to look up the differences in how WWW was first described vs now “wide-area” → global “info retrieval” → info system (JavaScript didn’t arrive until a couple of years later) they tried to make “W3” happen but it didn’t catch on, WWW won hypermedia → media

i suppose it's not that surprising that the class of people famous for not picking up on social cues would believe that they are in fact very good at it
Hot take: Neurodivergent people can understand social cues just fine. What throws us off is often the INAUTHENTICITY behind them. So much of society revolves around fake smiles, meaningless small talk, and pretending everything is fine when it clearly isn’t. Like, babe, I can see that you’re hurting. How am I supposed to comfortably sit here and discuss the weather when your entire soul looks exhausted?

opus 5.5 does still struggle with playing chess, it recommends dubious moves & misses obvious tactics. you can mitigate by having it generate the board positions in ascii (or having it run stockfish ofc) but plain reasoning isn't up to the task of evaluating a move sequence
