A funny thing about getting old is "recently" commonly means TWENTY YEARS.

I made an effort to get out tonight and see Digger on a massive screen. What a huge swing of a movie.

This was great alright - note that Oculus had ex Pixar running their Studio dept. at the time and you can really feel that here.
The strongest “I’m living in the future” moment was the First Contact demo on the Oculus CV1 in ~2016 and I’ve been chasing it ever since. Yeah yeah we’ve got AI and self driving cars and stuff now, but it doesn’t hit the same. Shame that the space kind of fizzled out…but here’s to hoping there’s a resurgence soon. There’s got to be other technologies that had an extreme “wow future” moment that never panned out. What would your “oculus” moment be in the 90s, 80s, 70s?

I think retro game dev expresses something about the human challenge of low resource creativity. What made that Norwegian lumberjack spend his winters making groundbreaking platform games for a 40 year old Commodore Vic 20? These are questions that we might no longer ask.
Tomb Raider on the Commodore 64? Four nights. A hundred prompts. A Tomb Raider that actually boots on a Commodore 64 Ultimate. Dave Izon’s Raider 64 is the kind of thing the C64 scene argues about before it finishes loading. He had the idea years ago — Lara-style rooms, climbing, traps, enemies — then parked it, because the graphics in his head never made it onto the screen. This month he handed the art problem to Astra, the model he says finally produced sprites he was willing to use, plus a custom character set he says was better than anything he would have drawn himself. He kept going. Gameplay pieces, a Tomb Raider-flavoured tune. Four nights and well over 100 prompts later, the prototype looks like the game he had been failing to finish by hand. He is blunt about what it is not. He says this is not programming a C64 game, and that people who say so are right. He knows the 6510, the charset limits, and the SID budget. This pass was a test of the toolchain, not a claim that the machine got easier. The needs a RAM Expansion Unit. The 6510 still only sees 64K; the REU is a DMA bank the CPU cannot address directly, so frames get copied into main RAM. I played through on my Commodore 64 Ultimate, the download is still an impressive release. Custom charset rooms, platforms, ladders, hazards etc. It is a prototype / demo that is fully playable and looks amazing. This was my first time playing so just like the OG Tomb Raider I had to nut out the puzzles, and I have to say this is really good. Just 4 days and Dave and his Ai friend produced this. Impressive. So the question worth answering: if the idea is good and the author cannot draw, compose, or finish coding on their own, is a game that exists because of Ai, better than a game that never exists? Or does the scene only count when a human fought the VIC-II for every frame? Is this the future of Commodore 64 games? (For further updates follow Dave's YT Channel and download the playable demo from the links in the comments below).

These are some of the cool hand painted game box titles I did in the early 1990s! This has become a lost art in the digital age. #illustration #popculture #movieart #boxart #retrogames

You can notice the linear key frame interpretation. A human assistant animator may have better judged the temporal curves.
Another test of bringing a rough pencil test by the amazing Disney animator #MiltKahl up to today's standards using AI, in this case, #Seedance 2.5 on @dreamina_ai What do you think? Do you think Milt would have embraced this technology?

There's a protest tomorrow (Wednesday) against the crackdown on LGBT+ life in Turkey - Turkish Embassy, 8 Raglan Road, D4 at 12.45pm. I can't be there but promised to show my support. Turkey, one of the few muslim countries that does not criminalise gay people, was relatively tolerant up until recent years. But like other authoritarians, the increasingly unpopular President Erdogan is trying to distract from his government's failings by targeting and demonising minority groups. Just like in Hungary, his real target is not gay or lesbian Turks who he had no interest in baiting for decades. Rather it's a part of a plan to extinguish what is remains of Turkey's democracy and her people's freedoms. EU and Irish government should not turn a blind eye to it 🇹🇷🏳️‍🌈🇪🇺

Climate change.
I’m just trying to imagine what they must have been feeling in that moment… trapped with no way out. I can’t even imagine the fear, helplessness, and desperation a person would feel when there seems to be no escape.
