My kids were sad to learn that the @Roku aquarium screensaver they've grown up with on every TV in our house is going away.
An interesting lesson in the digital age: on one hand, we no longer really own anything. On the other, every once in a while, artists still have power.
Jim Sachs created an aquarium so beloved that Roku users are mourning a screensaver. Now he’s walking away from a lucrative deal rather than renew it under Fox ownership. An artist standing by his principles. 🐠

So who wants to play #GhostOfATale2? Please come and visit us at gamescom next week (Hall 10.1, stand A087)! More info (and screenshots) in our new update: ghostofatale.com/who-wants-t…
I pitched a Ryse 2 where you played a Spaniard inspired by figures like Bartolomé de las Casas. Horrified by the treatment of the Inca, determined to force the Crown to confront the massacres, with a sword instead of a Bible. Shame we never got to make it. ixbt.games/en/news/2026/07/1…
Amazing work from the team!
The MetaHuman Animator Markerless Motion Capture (MCC) Plugin is now live in Unreal Engine 5.8. It takes a video and captures the 3D motion of the body, face, and hands. You can download it for free from FAB.com:

This release is a dream come true and I’m grateful to Epic Games for believing in the technology and the Meshcapade team.
We joined Epic just a few months ago and have completely rearchitected our approach. The model is now based on a diffusion transformer, which helps it deal with occlusion. Meshcapade’s MoCapade solution was already best in class, and we’ve made it even better.
Based on our testing, this is the most accurate markerless mocap solution ever made. Body pose is 9% more accurate, the motions are 29% smoother, and foot sliding is reduced by 34%, all while retaining the same high accuracy in 3D world motion.
The MetaHuman team has turned this technology into a full-fledged tool for animators that gives them complete creative control of their animation from conception through to the final cut. With any camera, you can capture your own motion and get it onto your character.
No special clothes.
No special background.
No special camera.
No need to calibrate.
Any length video.
All processing is done locally — your data never leaves your machine. Use the output to animate Metahumans or retarget to other characters. You can even get SMPL-X out if you want.
Limitations? The current version only works with a static camera and one person and is currently only tested and supported on Windows. But this is just the beginning!
Check out the new autorigging features in 5.8, the improved shot sculpting pipeline, and the new performant crowd tools! instagram.com/reel/DYpYFdoBt…
Frustrating how organizations like @washingtonpost can send me a mail full of ads, with links to articles, I follow one and land on another page full of ads, and then they pay gate the actual story. You got me! Cha-ching! Why is everything today just a scam?

Tomorrow, I start a new full-time position as VP Digital Human Research at Epic Games. (And no, this isn’t an April Fools’ joke.)
Today, I’m taking early retirement from Max Planck and will become an Emeritus Director.
As an Emeritus Director, I will continue to supervise my remaining students, oversee ongoing projects, and wind down my department over the next couple of years, which is a normal process when a director retires.
Being a Max Planck director is the best academic job in the world and it has been my great honor to co-found and help build the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. I love the institute deeply.
But my statutory retirement age was looming and I’m not done yet. I’ve been working on capturing and modeling human movement for 30 years and it has gone from a fringe topic to something that works robustly and has immense potential.
With AI today, scale matters, and achieving that scale increasingly requires industry. In particular, digital humans are moving from research prototypes to foundational technology across industries. At this point in my career, I want to get this technology into the hands of millions of users, while pushing the frontier of digital humans.
I know that this is a challenging time for the games industry. Such times are precisely when people get creative, the industry is open to change, and real innovation can take root.
Epic Games is the ideal place for this. The talent is deep, there is a compelling vision for how games will evolve, and the commitment is clear. I’m excited to join them and the rest of the Meshcapade team.
There is no good way to express on social media the depth of my gratitude to the Max Planck Society, my co-directors, students, post docs, and staff. It has been an amazing 15-year journey because of you. Thank you.

In the coming days, employers will see a stream of resumes of once-in-a-lifetime quality folks. An important thing to understand is that Epic never lowered our hiring standards as we grew, and the layoff wasn't a performance-based "rightsizing" as companies call it nowadays. It's a sound bet that anyone with Epic Games on their resume is in the top few percent of their discipline.
Sad news for Epic Games. Hope the efforts to turn things around can work. gamesbeat.com/epic-games-lay…
These are so great, and they don't even touch on the news surrounding OpenAI wanting rotalties on things you make with ChatGPT.
While playing Arc Raiders I conversationally created an app with @claudeai to debug some skel generation ML papers it was testing for me.
We aren't ready for this. My kids will not buy software like Photoshop, software will be ephemeral. Invoked on demand for the task at hand.
Working with #Claude at times feels like onboarding a junior. "Are you sure you checked your work like we discussed?" :D
Welcome! Why does my local airport, which gets tens of millions in tax subsidies, charge families and the infirm 7 dollars to use a luggage cart? @RDUAirport this is heartless capitalism at its best.
I should say, I thought that @Xbox had a poor pipeline and support for getting family accounts and stuff, but @Microsoft is stellar in comparison to @Google at this. I guess @Minecraft was a forcing function 🤣
