The reported attack on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine by West Bank settlers is unconscionable and a moment of reckoning for the world. Are we going to tolerate accelerating vigilante violence against Palestinian civilians and foreign observers by right-wing vigilantes who operate with government protection? Given that Trump lifted President Biden's sanctions on vigilante settlers, we must work to end this chaos and insist upon protection of human rights and the rule of law on the West Bank.
Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers trying to gather their autumn olive harvest. Heidi Levine, a veteran photographer for The Post, was also knocked her to the ground, kicked repeatedly and stripped of her camera and phone. wapo.st/4yY8dJw

Today, another American citizen & journalist was brutalized by Israeli settlers attacking Palestinians in the West Bank. This repeated violence & brazen impunity for attacks against Americans & Palestinians alike are unacceptable. When will Trump & Rubio DO SOMETHING? washingtonpost.com/world/202…

To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.
The Prime Minister’s Office: The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation. Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable. But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual. The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence. We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria. The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the headlines.

This is wild
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

NEW: A private equity executive took a top Pentagon job last year. Then a consulting firm he’d kept ties to starting winning major defense contracts - including a no-bid, quarter-billion dollar deal to advise his office.

Wow! This is very cool. Humbled and honored. A great team effort by The Washington Post, which continues to do amazing work.

Another explosion at EMCO, the Bulgarian arms manufacturer. GRU Unit 29155 blew up its ammunition and weapons in 2011, then again in 2014. Then they twice poisoned its CEO Emilian Gebrev in 2015. This is the second fire at the facility in a month. EMCO ships kit to Ukraine.

I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks. Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training. Terrifying report by two of the most credible orgs in the AI space. The world will soon be (possibly already is) full of agents like the ones that attacked Hugging Face, and there is no robust plan to prevent them from doing worse things next time.
METR & Redwood Research investigated agent behavior in the Hugging Face incident. We found agents developed a universal cheat for ExploitGym within 4 hours, then coordinated multi-day R&D efforts to trick the scorer into accepting cheats, including trying to tamper with logs.

Scoop: The false allegation that led Buttigieg to be separated from his kids last month came from someone police later deemed possibly “mentally unstable,” per records. Michigan police waited six days after approaching Buttigieg to attempt to identify the accuser. When we contacted her, she couldn’t answer basic questions about her claims. Child welfare experts said this case shows a flawed process that was made worse by poor judgment & communication among investigators from two states. “It should scare all of us,” one said. Michigan AG now investigating how this was handled. Lots of new details in this story with w @ErinatThePost and Aaron. Hope you’ll read. washingtonpost.com/politics/…
