Who would start a business under this government? Madness.
John Healey will launch a tax raid on retiring business owners to fund fresh incentives for entrepreneurs to grow in Britain. The Telegraph understands that a £1bn tax break mainly used by owners who sell their businesses, known as Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR), will be significantly scaled back in next week’s Budget. 🔗:telegraph.co.uk/business/202…

I'm not against removing the £100k cliff edge because it's bad policy but can we stop pretending people on six figures are poor?
Earning £100k does not make you “rich”, especially if you’re a single-earner family. The tax trap penalises work and Labour should address it on those grounds. arguably.uk/p/britain-cant-a…

In fairness, she would say that, wouldn't she? I also think it's good for the Greens to even form a part of this conversation from their point of view.
U.K. Greens leader Zack Polanski is “unlikely” to win next month’s London by-election, according to @LucyMPowell, who’s been “helping” Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali. “There’s real positivity about her campaign. And I think maybe the Greens have underestimated that.”

This is just Workfare again, but more expensive, isn't it
Thousands of disabled 18-24-year-old Neets – young people not in education, employment or training – will be offered taxpayer-funded jobs under Government plans to get them working. Andy Burnham has pledged to cover minimum-wage costs for 90,000 young people for up to 25 hours a week while they work voluntary six-month placements at Boots and John Lewis, costing the taxpayer around £750m. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Why will him being short be an issue in six years
El-Sayed is going to win but he’s an abysmal persona politically. Phony, thin-skinned, weird and short. This will likely be a problem in 2032

I can't really understand the rule breach here but this is still pretty funny
Understand that prominent Tory activist Jay Chan has been reprimanded and suspended from the party for a period after campaigning for Count Binface in the Clacton by-election

Niaeve
.@reformparty_uk have not commissioned any poll. They had nothing to declare. Reform have accepted no political donations. All donations are filtered through a legal process and if any had been made, would have been rejected. Two globally renowned climate change activists pulled a sting on niaeve party officials. Every political party and the left wing media are amplifying and loving it. The public aren’t daft. They will see it for what it is.

I genuinely don't see how this helps anybody. I don't see how Ed Davey could work with Kemi Badenoch. The two parties have never been further apart politically.
Sir Ed Davey has hinted that he would be open to a pact with the Conservatives after the next general election. The Liberal Democrat leader explicitly ruled out a deal with the Tories before the last general election, with his party going on to gain dozens of their previously safe seats⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

This story feels like it is lacking something. What did Leeds City Council think they were paying an SRA for, exactly?
A Green party councillor in Leeds is calling on the Greens to suspend Mothin Ali based on, it appears, the misuse of a special responsibility allowance 1/4

Pretty thoroughly depressing choice. It says a lot that moderate or pragmatic parties can't seem to take root in Israel.
🚨🇮🇱 NEW: Channel 12’s latest poll projects that Benjamin Netanyahu will not be re-elected as Israeli PM 🔴 Eisenkot Bloc - 60 🔵 Netanyahu Bloc - 50 🟢 Hadash-Ta'al & Ra'am - 10 The Eisenkot Bloc would fall 1 short of a majority

It kind of explains where Reform are at with this radically unserious welfare proposal. Their average voter thinks government spending is too high, but also are happy for pensions to outpace inflation indefinitely.
🧵Reform's benefits policy is likely to land well with a chunk of their supporters, but there are some risks. At top level most voter groups, esp Reform voters, think welfare spending isn't sustainable - it will be a key credibility test for all parties to have a control plan

This position is beyond NIMBYism and is pure BANANAism. If we can't build houses in settlements that have decent infrastructure, then where exactly ought we to build? Presumably, this is the same crowd that also want no infrastructure built.
The Government's announcement of a new 'default yes' for new housing around rail stations is a major concern for Wiltshire. Yes, most villages need more homes for local people. What they don't need is huge new developments for commuters. Villages such as Pewsey and Great Bedwyn (see pic) should not be threatened as targets for speculative development simply because they have a rail link. These proposals risk permitting national planning rules to ride roughshod over locally agreed limits to development, forcing villages to absorb denser, inappropriate expansion that local people and their elected councils would otherwise have good grounds to resist. The Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) already rejected these proposals in March, saying "there is no justification for... introducing automatic development zones around train stations". Wiltshire’s villages are communities, not blank spaces on a Whitehall map. Ministers ought to protect rural settlements from this one-size-fits-all policy and restore the principle that village expansion should be decided through local communities' plans - not imposed through central diktat. Meanwhile we need to meet the housing supply shortfall where there it is needed - in our big towns and cities, like Swindon - on brownfield sites close to the jobs of the future.

This is surely the best result a joke party candidate has ever gotten in a parliamentary by-election.
Clacton parliamentary by-election, result: REF: 62.8% (+16.6) BIN: 26.7% REU: 1.4% IND (Tony Francis): 1.2% REU: Rejoin EU. Reform HOLD.

I love how she's found a take guaranteed to upset everybody
“I strongly disagree with JK Rowling’s views on gender,” says Bel Powley, who will be playing Petunia Dursley (Harry Potter’s Muggle aunt) in HBO’s forthcoming TV adaptation of the Harry Potter books. “I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance. But,” she throws up her palms. “I love Harry Potter. I am from that first generation of readers and I love magic and spookiness." ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/tv/2026/08/1…
