#GraphicalAbstract - New study buff.ly/hgkEAbv by @cunninghamjoice has compared changes in health outcomes following an 8-week GLA:D® programme for knee or hip osteoarthritis. Would you expect a difference between those with single vs multi-site pain? @helfrench @PhysioSania @Dorte_Groenne @ewa_roos @clo2me @STSkou

Just published!
Work led by Dr @belinda_lawford shows that having an x-ray to diagnose knee arthritis might make you more likely to consider potentially unnecessary surgery

I do not think it is either surgery or exercise. Exercise first is however a good option for most, also young adults with knee injury.

@FOF_research news this week:
Athletes most commonly used analgesics to treat pain/injury after sports participation (62 %), and paracetamol was most frequently used (84 %). Injury severity was associated with increased odds and rate of analgesic use: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3920…
To better engage men, future programs should include a clear description of the concept of the exercise, high-intensity exercise, a reduced emphasis on social activities, and consistency in the instructors' roles and guidance: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3976…
In 2024, methodological advances were made that could help to guide users to choose more appropriate and robust MIC estimates to interpret OA study results, and help in presenting treatment alternatives to patients with OA:

🆕1 in 4 patients with knee osteoarthritis participating in exercise therapy had a previous knee joint surgery.
🆕Patients with previous knee surgery can expect clinical outcomes similar to patients without prior knee joint surgery.

Exercise first is the way to go. Exercise therapy is more effective than we think it can be. Unfortunately, surgery is not as good as we would like it to be. For example, at least 20% experience chronic knee pain after total knee replacement. Try exercise first.

Structured education and exercise therapy is COST-EFFECTIVE in delaying/avoiding joint replacements in those with lower pain levels (??? low-value), saving the health system $100M annually!!!
