Pope Leo XIV will not make his scheduled visit to Assisi on October 27 in order to “aid his recovery” following his recent thoracic surgery, according to the Holy See Press Office.
The Pope will instead send a message to express his closeness to the organizers and attendees of the “Unarmed and Disarming Peace” meeting, which marks the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace convened in the Italian city by Pope St. John Paul II.
“To aid his recovery following the thoracic surgery he underwent on Tuesday of last week, Pope Leo XIV will be unable to attend the ‘Unarmed and Disarming Peace’ meeting in Assisi on October 27, as planned,” read the statement.
The Press Office assured everyone that the Holy Father remains convinced “that the ‘Spirit of Assisi’ dialogue and the search for words and gestures of peace are valuable resources in an age of conflict.”
At the same time, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora said the Holy Father underwent a scheduled follow-up chest X-ray, which confirmed that his “postoperative recovery is progressing very well.”
“However, given the short time that has elapsed since the surgery, his doctors advised against the planned helicopter journey on October 27 as a precaution,” they noted in the statement released on Friday by the Holy See Press Office.

🇻🇦🇬🇧 With the “gracious approval of His Majesty The King, The Dean and Canons of Windsor are delighted to announce that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has become Papal Confrater of the College of St George at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.”
This act of confraternity represents a visible sign of spiritual fellowship, ecumenical friendship and Christian fraternity. It recognises both the centuries-old relationship between the College & Chapel of St George, Windsor and the Holy See, as well as the progress in relations between the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.
It also reflects the deep mutual esteem between Pope Leo XIV and King Charles III and their shared desire for Christian unity.
These reciprocal acts of confraternity are tangible expressions of spiritual fellowship and a shared commitment to Christian unity. King Henry VIII’s Reformation prompted a historic separation from the Roman Catholic Church. Mindful of the value of Christian unity, in an increasingly polarised and turbulent world, the King and the Pope have joined together in “Christian brotherhood and, for the first time in half a millennium, are receiving religious titles which underscore what unites rather than what separates the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England.”
To mark these signs of confraternity, specially commissioned Chairs have been created for the two religious sites. The Chair presented to the King sits next to the monastic stalls in St Paul’s Outside the Walls. A corresponding chair for the Holy Father, will be unveiled at St George’s Chapel, Windsor in due course.
During last year’s visit, and with the Pope’s approval, the Archpriest of the Papal Basilica and the Abbot of St Paul’s Outside the Walls welcomed the King as Royal Confrater of the Abbey. Before the mid-sixteenth century, the Kings of England had a historic role in right of St Paul’s Outside the Walls in Rome.
In response, and with the approval of His Majesty and the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Dean and Canons of Windsor invited the Holy Father to become Papal Confrater of the College and Chapel of St George and His Holiness has graciously accepted.

“Beneath the armor that so many teenagers build around themselves to avoid suffering lies the desire to love and be loved,” Pope Leo XIV said on October 22 to participants in the International Congress for Pastoral Care in Schools and Universities, taking place at the Vatican.
In his address he urged those present to encourage young people and help them “become protagonists of a new way of inhabiting the world, builders of fraternity and of a more just society.”
