it's a cultural thing, jae doesn't have them because he grew up in a multi cultural/modern place and he never had connections to air nomad practices
Something I’ve noticed about the evolution of the Air Nomads throughout the Avatar timeline is genuinely fascinating.
During Avatar Wan’s era, airbender tattoos looked completely different, and airbenders seemed far more spiritually connected. They could glide and maneuver through the air almost effortlessly, even without the use of glider staffs.
Then, in the leaked Legend of Aang movie, Tagah’s tattoos had a completely different design. By Aang’s era, we see yet another variation. And now, in Avatar: Seven Havens, the Airbending master we’ve seen doesn’t even appear to have tattoos at all.
It makes me wonder: Are airbender tattoos really just a symbol of mastery, or do they represent something deeper, like spiritual connection, cultural identity, or even power?
Because the further we move away from Wan’s era, the more it feels like airbenders are gradually losing touch with their original culture and traditions. Could this be a sign that something fundamental about Air Nomad spirituality has changed over thousands of years?
Or am I reading too much into the differences in their designs? What do you guys think?
