Relief. And thinking hard about what comes next. But mostly relief. That was too close. Congratulations to Lula and the PT, and mostly to Brazilian civil society which mobilised in a way so many other countries- my own included - have failed to when the chips are down.

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

Absolutely appalled by this execution by Saudi Arabia of a Bangladeshi couple allegedly kissing in Masjid al-Haram.
The shameless hypocrisy of Saudi authorities is staggering, allowing footballers to ‘live in sin’ yet executing a newly married couple? What the actual FUCK.

Anti-kapitalist başkaldırılar yeniden her yerde!
Really sad that the NSSR is bowing to these right wing pressure tactics.

Some context for this event, which among other things, typifies the dramatic rightward repositioning of @TheNewSchool that has accompanied the termination and forced retirement of many brilliant scholars and the effective destruction of tenure:

Amazing how quiet the ‘freedom of expression’ liberal literati are right now re: Sally Rooney.
The types w pics of Václav Havel on their mantelpieces have nothing to say about the most successful Anglophone writer of her generation fearing imprisonment for words.
We see you!

Terrible news. Thomas's incredible book on Gramsci is one of those rare works where the fine-toothed comb approach to the use of language really feels like it holds political significance. Dense scholarship that actually matters from a revolutionary class perspective.
It is with immense sadness that we at Historical Materialism share the news of the death of our comrade, friend and long-standing member of the editorial board, Peter Thomas. Our thoughts are with his partner Sara Farris, their daughters, and his broader family. @histmat

I was devastated to hear about the death of Peter Thomas. He made a massive contribution to Gramsci research, and to Marxist scholarship generally through his HM work. Shocking news

It’s striking how similar the crises in Iran and Ukraine have become.
Both countries are in existential fights against much larger powers led by authoritarian presidents eager to reclaim past glories.
Sustained mobilization, endemic corruption, and economic pressure have undermined political legitimacy, turning both conflicts into potential regime change wars.
Neither Iran nor Ukraine can win their wars outright. They have to persist in an attritional conflict, and higher energy prices are a key pressure point.
In response to the energy disruptions, Trump and Putin are deepening their collaboration.

Absolutely brilliant that SFI, AISA, the CPI(M) and the Left have taken the protest to other parts of Delhi.
(INA and access to the Jantar Mantar radial further up partly blocked as of now, be careful if you're out.)
Already clear that the protesters have won the day. Imagine bringing in 25,000-odd troops, cutting off transport and the Internet, barricading the city's central hub — and still they can't stop Delhi from showing up.
