JUST IN: A 50% tariff on about $20 billion worth of Canadian products went into effect early Saturday after last-ditch negotiations failed to resolve the escalating trade dispute between the two countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the “progress” made in the negotiations was “not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians” and that Canada will impose matching tariffs on American goods “dollar for dollar.”
Reminder: American importers pay these tariffs, which ultimately get passed on to consumers through higher prices.
