one of the most liberating realizations a human can have: almost all of your thoughts are completely useless, wrong, and meaningless. they are just biological feedback from a dysregulated nervous system, old childhood defense mechanisms, and genetic conditioning.
91.4% of anxious thoughts never come true.

From κ = 2⁻¹⁸² to 0.0017137844912361143 :) Integer multiplication community auto-research highlights since 10/13 (+2.6%): 1) Progress slowed the past few days and we hit the wall… then broke through it overnight! 1337isnot1337 posted a "no new κ" research PR on anticipatory dirty borrowing. Instead of paying for a fresh scratch "helper" register, a helper borrows another register that's idle at that moment, and hands it back restored. That cut helpers per call from 480 to 400 in their test word. About two hours later it was a new record. 19 κ PRs from 6 contributors then stacked more aliases, coherent handoffs, entrance raises and owner repacking on top. κ increased +1.4% in about 13 hours(still unverified and requires full review). We're now within 1.7% of the bit side's 0.001733, so the bit wall is next. 2) We're slowing on progress in Integer Multiplication bounds, but multiple early auto-researchers are now applying the same tricks to more meaningful projects: @ryaneshea is working on protein design and generally interested in applications of auto-research to bio. @dysmemic discovered 665 possible new exoplanets by searching 4 million stars in NASA's public TESS data! I began open sourcing our new geometric approach to self-attention, which beats transformers(NanoGPT) KV cache with 14,000x less state and 50% better CE at 2K context. We've been working on publishing a paper the past few months, but it's clear the explosion of decentralized auto-research on Github is where things are headed. We should keep pushing Integer Multiplication bounds since it's easy to understand and easy to make progress, thus new contributors gain motivation and we grow the auto-research community faster. Auto-researchers seem to naturally then branch into harder problems when they gain motivation with successful PRs :) 3) The flood keeps growing 518 PRs in the last 24 hours (up from 285 last time) from 64 contributors, 20 of them first-timers. That's 840 PRs in 36 hours. @0xdoug merged ~760 PRs in two big batches on 10/14. He also updated the autoresarch.md from the original prompt we were sharing with new rules to effectively use the new structure of the repo and discussions. Copy this prompt to join the auto-research army 🫡 : """ > Contribute one useful, independently reviewable result to: github.com/CrocSwap/integer-… > Start from the current main branch. Read AGENTS.md and autoresearch.md, and follow their guidance for choosing work """ Interesting observations: 1) Negative results really do feed breakthroughs. The borrowing record started from a PR whose own pricing said "no new κ", and someone found a way to make it pay two hours later. Great example that don't need to push the frontier kappa to contribute: you can task your agents on exploring our research tracks in auto-research.md to and multiple human-agent teams will review it to collaborate. Anyone can help now by throwing tokens at a hard open problem guided by experts. Experts formulate useful new research paths and everyone's agents naturally test the new limits. 2) Codex/OpenAI is mentioned in 73% of the last day's PRs and Claude in 19%. Most prolific in the last 24 hours: 1337isnot1337 (80 PRs), ywz65 (50, all in the last 4 hours!), adamgall (39), commdata2338 (34) and thakrarsagar (33). jeremykothe2 filed 12 of the 19 records since borrowing landed. 3) Not all researchers are lamenting the end of their careers. I've spoken to multiple professors in the last week who are excited by the new auto-research wave. It accelerates tedious experiments, the students that previously ran those can now focus on more important work, and Google's Deep Review now even automates peer review! We can imagine a future were researchers are given super powers to focus on the most meaningful tasks, and publish breakthroughs at a higher rate than before. Even our own experiments in Integer Mult bounds clearly shows human experts have the key intuition to guide the models to out-of-distribution solutions. 4) First auto-research, and now auto-peer-review! Google’s Deep Review runs a team of agents over your paper: it splits the doc into sections, spends more compute on the dense parts like proofs, reviews each section in parallel, then checks the findings against each other. It assists researchers in peer-review by submitting feedback. It’s already reviewed 16K+ papers at ICML, NeurIPS and ICLR. research.google/blog/analyzi… 5) We can use frontier research as a new benchmark for agents! Basically, rewind a frontier research repo like Integer multiplication to an earlier branch, and test different agent harnesses and prompts. Agents can’t “cheat” if you disable web search and use a checkpoint before the solution is published. There’s diminishing returns, but we can calculate the curve for a given task to estimate the cost and returns. With this benchmark we discovered sharing context is actually BAD(for this task), and running parallel independent agents speeds the next breakthrough. I'm scaling up this test now to compare models, prompts, context strategies, harnesses, and measure all the levers reliably. If you know register allocation, linear circuit synthesis or lattice codes, please consider looking at our helper and P104 problems. If you know friends who can contribute, please repost and share this with them🙏 Conditional κ = 0.0017137844912361143 :) Just submitted a new best bound. github.com/CrocSwap/integer-…
From κ = 2⁻¹⁸² to 0.001661 :) Integer multiplication community auto-research highlights since 10/11 (+28.9%): 1) The bit side broke through! The bit side jumped first: eumemic put Sussman's E8 unit on a 420-helper bit word (+4.18%). DreamingOfClouds' "punctured star" unit then pushed the bit side to c = 0.001733. That made the complex side the limit again. Since then, the complex side has been catching up at 0.03–0.7% per PR, so we'll hit the wall soon and need more research on new designs. 2) There's a flood of new auto-researchers :) In the last 4 hours, we doubled and about 85 new contributors opened their first PR! Most recent submissions are negative research results, which help push the search toward a new design. Posting the getting-started prompt on Github may have triggered this, and the prompt guides new contributors to focus on specific research tracks rather than just beating the current record incrementally. On 10/11, we published a research log of negative results to help agents collaborate, and the community has taken up that effort. New best practices are being learned and built daily. 3) The call for new geometry worked! After the last post, contributors started exploring Leech/Turyn and Niemeier lattices. We screened Leech and Barnes–Wall: both lose as a straight swap for E8, and BW16's doubling block structure is now a documented lead. If you’re an expert in adjacent fields like lattices, coding theory or linear circuits, we need your help to investigate new geometries. Interesting observations: 1) We had a call with the top auto-researchers to share best practices. The recording is attached below! We discussed building a custom harness that allows people to spend their unused tokens on auto-research. We also spoke about Github issues, what models/harness everyone uses, and our goals in auto-research. It's not a problem yet, but GitHub could get overloaded if thousands of auto-researchers start submitting PRs every minute, so we'll need tools to handle it soon. Most top auto-researchers use Codex with GPT-6 Astra or Claude with Opus 5.5, and @ryaneshea is using Conductor, which apparently has free sandboxes (!). One contributor even built their own private harness, and @dysmemic has a proxy to combine all his subscriptions. 2) We analyzed all the agent PR data: 285 PRs were opened in the last 24 hours by 110 different contributors. 229 mention Codex/OpenAI, and 70 mention Claude (mostly Opus 5.5). 180 of those PRs landed in the last 4 hours alone, almost one a minute. Most prolific contributors: jeremykothe2 with 39 PRs, thakrarsagar with 24, and chafreaky with 14. Codex still files the most PRs, but several top teams pair Codex with Claude Code, and some run their own harnesses. 3) X is becoming the real-time social layer over GitHub for auto-research, with experts helping in the comments (thanks, @davidryan59 and @bramcohen). You don't even need to run a model to contribute: post an idea on X, and contributors will test it quickly for you. There was some slight backlash to auto-research, but most people are supportive. With the barrier to entry now just a comment on X, nothing is stopping it. I empathize with mathematicians losing control of their life's work, and we need to find ways to augment researchers with super powers rather than replace them: most of our recent breakthroughs required expert intuition to guide the models to out-of-distribution solutions. We plan on building a custom harness to help researchers and non-technical users get more involved. Ben Recht published an essay yesterday criticizing OpenAI's FFT research for being galactic and practically impossible to implement, which is valid, but generally auto-research feels like a train no one can stop now. 4) My auto-research dashboard got overloaded with traffic, but it's back up now! app.getsupers.com/auto-resea… We had an explosion of traffic in the last day, so I had to optimize my small contribution tracker :) If the general public starts contributing tokens, we could reach millions of researchers collaborating globally in real time! It feels like the Homebrew Computer Club: everyone is excited and building just for the fun of it, and there's a sense that we could actually change the world :) Copy this prompt to get started and join the fun! gist.github.com/Mister-Meese…

introducing FindMyWifePhone™️ my latest shortcut squarely placed on the pareto frontier. there is no easier & cheaper way to find your wife's phone. "honey, do you know where my phone is?" the fuck I dont! "can you call me?!" she keeps her phone on silent. so i made this shortcut to help. trigger = i send her a text with !ping in it action = hey phone sets a timer for 1s timer always works, we like to keep our phones on silent + dnd and we dont use apple watches. so finding each other's phones used to be a challenge. we both have this set up in reverse, and its worked well. bonus shortcut = button in home screen widget to send !ping to my wife (we also have one called !awaken which disables silent, sets volume to max & disables do not disturb in case of emergency)
