Why are delusions adopted rather than something more plausible, or rather than nothing at all? Where do they come from?
I address these questions in a new paper with @PhilCorlett1, just out in @AustralJPhilos. You can check it out below (open access):

Very excited to share that my paper 'Epistemic Standards and Minimally Responsive Beliefs' has found a great home at Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.
If you'd like to read a preprint of it, it's available here:

Rest in peace Steve Albini.
We'll always regret not accepting your job application back in 2003!

On the blog today, @evan_westra distinguishes between two types of beliefs; epistemic beliefs and symbolic beliefs. Each describe different mental states and have different functions.

I note also a recent paper by @philcorlett and @fedebng. They explore how far the standard model can go in meeting challenges to the PC account – no time to compare and contrast here but worth reading (10/10)

A fascinating essay by a professional philosopher about his experience of schizophrenia.

Ever wonder what principled distinction can be drawn between religious delusion and religious belief? We manage it well in practice, but it can be hard to achieve reflective clarity on it. ... Here's my, & Simon Clarke's, own new suggestion - Open Access: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…

I think people are mostly into astrology because they find it fun to think and talk about, and because the category of “belief” involved is not aimed at truth or regulated much by evidence.
The number of people who believe in astrology is like a bellwether for how scientifically- and critically-minded your society is.
So it's a bit grim that it seems to be so trendy again. What explains its new popularity? I consider some reasons here: inews.co.uk/news/why-saturn-…

In my first tweet ever, I'd like to share a new paper of mine that just appeared in Mind & Language: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…. The paper is called "The rational role of the perceptual sense of reality". Open access preprint: psyarxiv.com/f9x34/
My paper with @PhilCorlett1, "Delusions and the Predictive Mind", is now forthcoming with the Australasian Journal of Philosophy. This started as a chapter of my PhD dissertation (2020). Excited to finally put it out there.

🚨New paper🚨 out in @JAMAPsych on cognitive science and psychiatry! jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… @NicolasPorot and I argue that in cases of monothematic delusions, the belief forming, storing and sustaining mechanisms don't seem to be functioning any differently than in neurotypicals
