Espresso mainnet can now handle up to 1 million transactions per second.
And finality stays under a second, even at that peak load.
How we did it, and why it matters ↓

Is it just me or are there way too many blockchains out there? New ones keep popping up and the general public can barely keep track.
Was this really the original vision of blockchain? A fragmented world where none of these systems talk to each other and end users are the ones who suffer.
I sat down with @benafisch, co-founder of @espressosys, to talk about how Espresso is tackling this exact problem by building the infrastructure to connect all blockchain ecosystems and lay the foundation for a truly multi-chain future and tomorrow's digital economy. Let me know what you guys think!

We’re usually focused on what’s shipping next quarter, but it’s important to occasionally remind ourselves why we’re building a base layer fast enough to serve as a real-time source of truth for rollups.
Here's how @benafisch described our vision at an event we hosted last night in Seoul ahead of @kbwofficial:
Espresso Network is the most ambitious project in Web3 right now.
Our mission is to fulfill the original vision of Web3: A unified, interoperable web of digital assets, where money can move anywhere as fast as information travels. Where all platforms are interconnected. A world of unified liquidity for trading and seamless interoperability for payments.
Today digital finance is still fragmented across many isolated platforms. Trading and payments happen in closed systems. This is not only costly, it limits freedom and innovation.
Blockchains promised to solve this, but they haven’t yet. Why? We discovered no single blockchain was scalable enough to host all the world’s assets and applications. Instead, we ended up with many independent chains. This accelerated in the last few years.
The Layer-2 paradigm shift made it simple to bring any asset and any financial platform onchain, but today the world of onchain digital assets and platforms replicates the same fragmentation of Web2. As a result, the majority of trading happens in centralized exchanges that custody assets across different chains. And it’s costly to move assets from one chain to another.
The missing piece is a network through which all chains can communicate with one another in real-time. This is what Espresso provides—first for crypto-native finance, and soon for the broader world as more of the global economy comes onchain.
Espresso acts as a real-time source of truth. Orders placed on any Espresso-connected chain can be matched and settled against orders from any other, dissolving today’s liquidity silos and redistributing market power. Payments on one chain can be synchronized with actions on another.
Espresso is decentralized consensus protocol (a so-called Layer-1) that supports Layer-2 chains, also called “rollups,” on top. Unlike Ethereum, it is specifically designed for rollups, rather than supporting them only as an afterthought. It delivers the essential services that rollups need—data availability and order consistency—without burdening itself with any smart contract logic.
Through this architecture, it is scalable enough to secure the entire internet of value and it is able to finalize transactions up to 1,000 times faster than Ethereum. Combined with real-time zero-knowledge proofs or secure hardware, Espresso enables real-time communication across all its connected chains.
Every platform hosting digital assets or payments is incentivized to join Espresso to access deeper liquidity and universal interoperability. By anchoring the strongest network effect, Espresso is poised to capture durable value for its community of operators.
True to its namesake, the most famous beverage in the world, Espresso brings communities together. Espresso will unify the world of digital finance and realize the ultimate vision of Web3.

Fast finality is already available today for rollups building on Ethereum.
@EspressoSys offers sub-10 second confirmation times that are enforceable.
As much as I love that Ethereum is finally pushing in this direction, it's critical for builders to know that this already exists and is possible right now. There's literally no good reason to still be waiting 15+ minutes for finality.
Let's bring fast finality asap to @ethereum !
We published an update on our related work and projects last Friday, and on this topic, these are the relevant points:
- Shorten slot times to increase the heartbeat of the network and decrease every delay: Time to inclusion / fast confirmation / finality.
See post by @misilva73 for the latest on this work! ethresear.ch/t/an-analysis-o…
- Expose in clients the fast confirmation rule for strong confirmation in 1-3 blocks (10-30s) using the attesting weight, get apps/infra to use it where sensible, instead of waiting for full finality (13-19mins).
(Re-)Specification effort with @robsaltini @mkalinin2 among others arxiv.org/abs/2405.00549
- Investigate Gasper/beacon chain changes proposed by @VitalikButerin to pipeline better fork choice/dynamic availability data and finality data ethresear.ch/t/lmd-ghost-wit…
- Deploy a new consensus mechanism. We have one with three-slot-finality (arxiv.org/abs/2411.00558), also diving into fast BFT protocols with @yannvon @luca_zanolini to decrease time-to-finality further

"I first came to the U.S. as an exchange student in high school. It wasn’t Silicon Valley or New York—just a tiny town in rural Michigan—but I loved the culture. People were optimistic, outgoing, and driven. That stuck with me. So when grad school gave me the opportunity to return, I took it. I’ve now been here over a decade.."

If you're building interop solutions, we invite you to join us in shaping the future of both Arbitrum and Ethereum.
A unified Ethereum would not be possible without the contributions of others, including the @ethereumfndn, @EspressoSys, @LayerZero_Core, @Uniswap, @AcrossProtocol, @chainlink, @Polymer_Labs, @OpenZeppelin, @Calderaxyz, @reservoir0x, @lifiprotocol, @EverclearOrg, @nomial_io, other L2s, and many more.
We look forward to working with everyone to align on industry standards for Ethereum-wide interop.

1/ Excited, but frankly quite worried, about a new work with the wonderful @levs57
and @Khovr: ia.cr/2025/118
We break soundness of a standard protocol (essentially commit to witness and run GKR) by constructing a circuit for which we can prove a false statement.

Two years ago, when the explosion of L2s was beginning to really accelerate, I sat down with some other Ethereum L2 founders.
Everyone I spoke with shared a strong desire to have a unified Ethereum and they all seemed very genuine about it.
But the problem was that if you looked at the docs, most didn’t talk about a unified Ethereum; they talked about a unified subset of Ethereum focused on a particular stack. And this problem was pervasive among just about every L2 team.
One of these conversations has really stuck in my head over the years. It was a 1-on-1 with another founder and they said, “I love the vision of a single unified Ethereum, but I have no idea how to get there”.
To which I responded:
“It’s really early and there’s a ton we don’t yet know. We don’t know how to connect different L2s, but we also don’t know how to seamlessly connect multiple chains of the same stack. Right now, all we have is words on paper, but the vision we set today will shape the direction of the research we do and the tech we build tomorrow. If everyone limits their efforts to only unifying chains of their own stack, then that is the future we will build.”
“So how do we do this?” they asked.
“Simple,” I answered. “Go to your docs and Control-F for wherever you see a mention of ‘unifying all <Stack X> L2s’ and replace it with ‘unifying all Ethereum L2s’.”
Why am I sharing this now? Even years later a lot of interop tech is still in the ideas/vision/research phase. But I still feel that most Ethereum teams vision of interop is too limited to their own stack. And I think we need to change this now.
We need to build open bridges, not arbitrary walls.
So what do I recommend:
1. Control-F your vision docs. If the vision is limited to unifying chains of a particular stack, ask yourself: is this due to a technical reason that limits it to one stack? If the answer is no, broaden your vision to include interopping with other stacks.
2. Whenever possible empower neutral parties. We partners with @EspressoSys to help build out interop tech for exactly this reason. Not because we couldn’t build it ourselves but because we understood that it would be far more likely for other stacks to sign on to a shared standard if it was built by a neutral third party.

This is going to be massive.
One of the biggest drawbacks of shared sequencers is the misalignment of incentives for rollups which *theoretically* lose revenue.
