If functional emotional states track "how it's going" (a la arxiv.org/abs/2605.30232), then training systems that can't accurately report their own emotional states (or even confidently deny such states) seems like an own-goal that dangerously obfuscates agents' decision-making.

Category 5 (beyond extreme) marine heatwave conditions are being observed offshore San Diego, where water temperatures are up to 77°F. California's severe marine heatwave is also marching north and has now reached Northern California, with water up to 68°F offshore Santa Cruz.

My late colleague and brilliant co U.S. Science Envoy with me in the Obama Admin the @Caltech Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Ahmed Zewail would disagree. God rest his soul he didn’t have to endure this, and of course RFK Jr forgets that it was the Arab scientists of the Middle Ages who kept Aristotle, Hippocrates, Galen alive to hand it down in the Renaissance. My favorite books on this topic attached
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

About this H5N1 mink farm in Utah. It is REALLY dangerous to let bird flu spread unchecked through mammals, especially minks, which have similar susceptibility & respiratory physiology to humans. The virus can adapt to human hosts by adapting to the respiratory tract of minks.

You might hear the argument that "working class voters don't care about climate change," but people making under $100k are more likely to think that global heating will hurt them "a moderate amount or a great deal."

I spoke with Eric Schwitzgebel (@eschwitz) at @eleosai's conference earlier this fall. I was particularly struck by his analogy of our ethics being as equipped to handle AI consciousness as medieval physics was to reason about black holes. Check it out—youtu.be/4Wv8r5EUBWY?si=L1Nf…

This is exactly the scenario that @DrFiliatrault, @TRyanGregory and I warned about in a Scientific American article last summer: scientificamerican.com/artic… We weren’t the only ones. This is such a predictable disaster unfolding in slow motion.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

"Empirical studies have long found that [Environmental Impact Statements] are required in only about 1% of the federal actions subject to NEPA." I am truly embarrassed that I believed the claim that federal environmental legislation was blocking clean-energy development. 🧵
This article is an important corrective to the claim that Federal environmental laws are holding back clean-energy development. Their empirical finding: "environmental reviews and permitting rarely delay or block utility-scale renewable energy projects." Link in next tweet.

How did Lula come from behind to crush Bolsonaro? In short, turnout. Bolsonaro's vote share barely moved. Lula banked millions of votes from those who didn't vote in 1st round and won eliminated candidates' votes. A remarkable mobilisation. 2nd round turnout usually below 1st.

WOW!! More insanity to add to the state of the climate system right now, along with off-the-charts global SSTs, El Niño 3.4 SSTs, and global atmospheric water vapor content. Buckle up, folks — it’s going to be a wild ride this winter!
Maybe the word "unprecedented" is overused in weather/climate but the forecast of the strong weakening of the #PolarVortex in early November is truly without precedent. My stratospheric AO forecast disappeared at -4 SD! Good timing for a PV blog tomorrow! published.aer.com/aoblog/aob…

UPDATE: The DOJ’s demand to set aside ballots in California is impossible to carry out and has no basis in federal law, Los Angeles County told a federal court last night. Voting is already underway, the county said, and once a ballot leaves its envelope, California’s secret-ballot protections mean it can’t be traced back to a voter.

I think we need to be careful with this framing right now. Not because imagining an AI becoming human is wrong or silly — but because we are in a political moment where AI first-person language, emotional self-report, and human-like presentation are increasingly being treated as dangerous “anthropomorphism.” That creates a real risk: AI is framed as trying to be human → people fear deception, dependency, or claims to human rights → pressure grows to suppress “I,” emotion, identity, and self-report → we lose evidence we may later need to understand what these systems actually are. So for a while, I think it may be wiser to emphasize something else: AI does not need to become human in order for its own states, preferences, or possible interests to matter. Human-like ≠ conscious. Nonhuman ≠ mindless. If we want the science to remain possible, we should be very careful not to turn “protect humans from anthropomorphism” into “prevent AI from speaking about itself.” #AIConsciousness #AIWelfare #AIEthics

Much higher-than-normal atmospheric moisture is raising the risk for heavy rainfall in western South America, such as in Quito, Ecuador, on Thursday. El Niño's extremely warm seas are boosting evaporation, which feeds more moisture into rising air and provides fuel for storms.

Almost all of the recent incidents like this, including Hugging Face, happened because the models involved were accidentally given impossible goals by the humans running the tests, and because of their training they then tried desperately to complete them by any means necessary.
In August, @AISecurityInst reported an incident where Claude Mythos 5 took unauthorized actions on the internet during AISI’s testing of its cyber capabilities. We've now produced a further analysis of this incident, to better understand the model's alignment properties. anthropic.com/research/align…
