๐ OpenTelemetry for Dart and Flutter takes a major step toward spec compliance.
Today we released dartastic_opentelemetry_api 1.0.0-rc.4, along with 0.12.0, a backport release for users on the stable version.
pub.dev/packages/dartastic_oโฆ
This release brings the Dart API into closer alignment with the OpenTelemetry specification. It closes all the compliance deviations identified so far and improves performance.
Highlights:
โก Microsecond trace and span ID generation.
๐ Expanded Metrics API with batch observable callbacks and improved instrument configuration.
๐ More accurate tracing, including better parent-child relationships, context handling, and explicit root spans.
๐ Stronger W3C Trace Context compliance for interoperability across distributed systems.
๐ ๏ธ Dozens of API improvements and fixes, including more compliant error handling and correct no-op behavior without an SDK.
Some changes are breaking, so check the CHANGELOG before upgrading.
But the real story is the community. This was an attack swarm that closed out our compliance tracker very quickly. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this release:
๐ @harshitt_13 Harshit Kushwaha - 8 PRs
๐ @yuzurihaa93 Yusuf Rosman - 5 PRs
๐ Robert Magnusson - 2 PRs and many detailed reviews.
๐ Benjamin Bennett - 2 PRs
๐ "I am Paradox" - 2 PRs
๐ Ahmed Abidi - 1 PR
๐ Rafael Almeida Barbosa - 1 PR
And thank you to everyone who reviewed PRs, tested changes, and helped move the project forward. The high quality shows: our hockey-stick growth continues to accelerate. We are over 30k downloads a week, about to breech 100,000 downloads for the month - and climbing fast. This is important work and will be on devices in your hand and all around you - TVs, cars, checkout registers, kiosks...
Next: We're shifting back to the SDK to close all the identified compliance issues and integrating API rc.4.
In an upcoming post, I will detail the plan to move the donation into official opentelemetry-dart repo once we reach our compliance bar.

Looks like there are lots of mixed opinions after the ๐ launch and I felt a need to post just a quick reminder... foldables didnโt start with apple (wow wow right?) weโve been building for android folds for years ๐
From the #Flutter side we are simply ready for this. With material and cupertino now decoupled from the core framework, we can support these layouts way faster than ever (remember?) . If you missed @craig_labenz's article on this, it is highly relevant now ;)

Today, we share a breakthrough on the planar unit distance problem, a famous open question first posed by Paul Erdลs in 1946.
For nearly 80 years, mathematicians believed the best possible solutions looked roughly like square grids.
An OpenAI model has now disproved that belief, discovering an entirely new family of constructions that performs better.
This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

One thing that LLM-based development brought that I didn't predict but makes perfect sense:
There's hardly any "ecosystem envy" anymore.
If there's a great library in {Python, TypeScript, C#, Java}, with unit tests, and you want it in Dart โ just ask an AI to port it for you.
